It has been a while since I read the SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN issues, but I believe the purpose was "Have powerful body to kill the original X-Men to punish Xavier for not saving Matthew."

Heh. I actually have the Micronauts book where Mentallo got his mind burned out. Man, I wish Marvel would get the rights back to the Micronauts so I could get my hands on some trade paperbacks...

Rom and the Micronauts were my two core comic books growing up. I'm right there with you, m'lord.

I remember being 8 years old and hones to dog DEPRESSED when Baron Karza showed back up in issue #50 and slaughtered half the people I loved in that book. Good times.
