Yikes, of all the Booster/Beetle "final meetings" tales, this may be the saddest.

It's odd to see one where it's Ted who lives and Michael dies...

Not dies, never existed at all, that's even worse.

I'm not crying.
I acknowledge that that Ted / Mike scene is sad, but the fact it's attached to this story offsets the sadness.

(There must be a reality out there somewhere where they get to live a nice life together, quietly doing whatever...)

Waverider, buddy, those fruit-colored stripes are not flattering you. Especially when you cross your arms so it looks like you decided to wear rainbow opera gloves.

There are a lot worse ways for John to go out than screwing over one more near-deity who thought he was above it all, using his patented combo of magic, trickery, and being an asshole.

Yeah.
On the one hand, I am sad because of the Booster/Beetle thing...
But fuck Waverider, he deserves what he got in this case.

Alas, this is not how John goes out; Dr. Fate and Zatanna show up to save him, much to his disgust and dismay. Likely he'll be showing up again in the main DCeased story.

Ted, I don't feel so good... I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go...

I haven't had the chance to read Booster/Beetle's original adventures, but I've seen a couple of "final meeting" stories with them and, just... how are they not a canon thing? They really seem like a canon thing.

Well, for one thing, Ted spent several years dead, followed by a few years not existing at all, and Michael spent several years in limbo.
That tends to put a crimp in any relationship.

Though at this point, they might as well be a canon thing, just no-one at DC says so to maintain some kind of deniability.

I don't see why they bother with deniability at this point. In 2019 it's not going to be a huge shock for a couple of C-list superheroes to be revealed as LGBTQ, and in the case of this pair it'd have made more sense to finally admit that the old married couple dynamic might exist for good reason rather than re-imagining a second tier character like Alan Scott as gay when I don't recall him ever having hints of it before.
