This is what I disliked about the series, among other things.
IMO, the series manages to go too far and not far enough, with the deaths.
Mettle's and Juston's later death were pointlessly vindictive, for example.
And here, Kid Briton's death is largely justified by his own shitty behavior and attempted murder of his own teammate.
For a series based on Battle Royal and Hunger Games, none of the protagonists really even approach a murky moral line. They act crappy to one another yes, but heroes remain heroes and no envelope gets even the slightest nudge, IMO.
Don't get me wrong, this is a poor idea to begin with. But if you're gonna do it, at least do it right.
To be fair I never got the impression in Hunger Games or Battle Royale that any of the previous protagonists really crossed the line either. Katniss in the third book does some amoral stuff but that’s when she’s trying to overthrow the dystopian government.
Really, apart from those too good for this cruel world, that’s the people who do indulge in morally murky behaviour who typically get called out, killed or both.
It's been a little while since I've read this series, but at the end don't Nico and Chase try to straight up murder Cullen because they know he's a threat?
And before that Nico tried to kill Apex and Death Locket, and thought she had succeeded.
No they don't actually succeed, but isn't it a testament to how far they've been pushed that they are willing to try?
