I feel like the "Mutant Situation" is the first event Marvel has done where both side are allowed to sound like real representatives of their position rather than caricatures.
In medieval times Pineapples were a symbol of wealth and privilege, so much so that in olden times Pineapples would be rented out so people could display them and look like a big shot.
So I can totally buy that Doom Genetically engineered Pineapples to live in East European Latveria.
I guess it's in character for Doom but I'm kind of tired of the notion that a marginalized minority group that has been routinely persecuted (to the point that the general public was indifferent to the Inhumans' indirect genocide of them) wanting a protected status and a refuge is somehow them flaunting their superiority.
It's weird, since back in the House of X/Dawn of X series, Cyclops told the FF that Franklin was free to come to Krakoa 'when he was ready'. Such a dramatic and sudden policy shift is iffy.
That does bring up the question of whose expertise would be the more likely to "fix" the situation, Reed Richards' or Xavier's/Magneto's/Apocalypse's. I think I'd give Doom the edge on any of them, though; he's demonstrated a better working knowledge of cosmic power (and how to steal it) than anyone I can think of.
Assuming it's something that actually needs fixing rather than the normal ebb and flow of Franklin's powers. I can recall at least three previous periods in which they were supposed to be gone or completely suppressed—they always come back.
The refuge and not wanting to be victims of persecution isn’t flaunting their superiority, flaunting their superiority is flaunting their superiority. The ruling party is indoctrinating the youth with racist values, self congratulating themselves over how much better they are at almost every opportunity, antagonising their closest allies and just two issues ago Magneto flat out said mutants are humanity’s superior. For a nation so desperate to discard their humanity, they’e Making the most human mistakes possible.
You would think the X-Men would at least try to get along with the FF. They're very influential and powerful humans with a family interest in preserving mutantkind. Mutants have enough enemies already without alienating natural allies.
Instead, Emma is threatening to put them on trial for illegal espionage, despite Krakoa never actually banning spying.
I mean, the FF has never seemed to have much of a problem with mutant persecution, up to and including giant murder robots, quietly government-sanctioned death squads and attempts at concentration camps. Despite at least one of their kids being a mutant. Their strategy seems to be that Franklin can pass as a human, as long as no-one makes any waves about it.
Johnny at least has been heard to call the X-men "muties".
Even with the motivation of their firstborn being a mutant, there has never been any indication that the FF is inclined to help with, or worry about, mutant persecution. They reserve their aggression and worry for the possibility of Franklin being outed or falling in with mutants.
Wanting a safe place from persecution in and of itself is perfectly fine, but from what I've seen it's pretty hard to deny there's been a pretty strong thread of mutant supremacist attitudes also accompanying the whole Krakoa situation. Like it or not, Doom has a valid point here too.
Doom's argument is pretty heavy on the projection because abusing diplomatic immunity is his bread and butter, meanwhile mutants are typically the ones being abused by governments and could use any protection they can get.
Notably the only mutant to 'abuse' krakoa's immunity would be Sabertooth who was heavily punished for killing humans even though Krakoa's laws on that hadn't even been codified yet.
Honest question as someone who's only reading the scans here, and probably missing some of those- does anyone outside of Krakoa know that Sabretooth got oublietted?
