It's a very cute scene, but it's a sad one too, as it's a cherished memory that Jason gives up as collateral so he can enter some weird metaphysical realm to talk to... someone or other.

And when he leaves, he tells the being he left it with, who is set to return it to him. to keep it because he doesn't want happy memories back. (They were stressing "Jason as the moody bad boy" a LOT back then)

I took him not wanting the happy memory back to mean that was too painful for him to keep and/or that he felt he didn’t deserve the memory.
