You can tell this is some kind of wild and fantastical science fiction Alternate Universe because the characters in it think that the USA will be able to help them STOP a pandemic

To anyone curious, this book gets a lot better. The "jump right off of the deep end and leave the reader guessing" schtick doesn't really work here, but it's slowly become an enjoyable title with some seriously cool, original ideas.
