No idea why this story was so controversial. Chuck Wendig lost a lot of respect from me for pretty much throwing Dennis Hopeless under the bus over this, too.
The woman is portrayed as a delusional idiot for thinking that there was good in Vader... when that's the exact thing that Luke is praised for.
It really objectively does come across as a poorly thought-out excuse to look down on "stupid women who want the bad boy" but missteps spectacularly by picking a bad boy that is most famous for his redemption.
She doesn’t want the good in him, she wants to be evil with him. She doesn’t love Vader the man, since he could never live up to the idea of Vader the myth. It’s less “I can fix him” and more the kind of person who wrote love letters to Ted Bundy. It’s meant to be sad because she deserves better and ends up projecting her frustrations and fantasies on the first person who had the decency not to verbally berate her.
