The accompanying text narration mentions flesh rotting and ink fading, so I fixated on that.

The one time I don't just gloss over the narration box..! XD

Sometimes I think I know a lot about Marvel continuity. Then I read a sentence like this where I don't understand half the words and I realize I don't.

No matter how I parse that, it sounds like one of them is redundant.

If "before" is meant to be taken temporally, then it means "in the past"-- the "road behind".

If it means "the road before you" then it's the same as "the road ahead."

This just comes across as stupid and faux-profound, like the stuff you say when you're high as a kite and staring at a blank wall as though it were the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

You've neatly described a great proportion of the narrative boxes for the current Ghost Rider series. I think Johnny Blaze's brain centipede is just making him write bad poetry.

"road ahead" = in the distance = the future.

Think of the difference between "I stand before you" and "I stand ahead of you."

The metaphor is clear. Still clumsily written. Doesn't really work on an open road, where a motorcyclist, travelling at great speed, will see the road ahead and before as the same. 'Ahead' and 'before' could have been switched around and could anyone have known?

The future should have been 'the road beyond', or 'the road around the bend',
