As you guys probably know, Donald Duck has an extremely popular secret identity as superhero in the Italian Disney comics continuity. The name is "Paperinik" which comes from Paperino (Donald's Italian name) and Diabolik (a famous cult character in pulp Italian comics, a thief and assassin who used disguises and genius inventions to commit crimes), and it's usually translated into English as Duck Avenger.

(And speaking of Diabolik, Milo Manara drew a really cool cover a while ago. It has nothing whatsoever to do with this post, but it's cool art, so take a look at it here: https://fumettologica.it/2017/10/diabolik-fuori-dagli-schemi-mondadori)

There are a billion Paperinik stories in Italian comics, but scanning and translating them and then editing the translation into the scanned pages takes a lot of time and effort. That's why until now I have never posted any, I just don't have the spoons.

Luckily, some kind soul on Tumblr decided to do it! Thank you, Keriwi1 from https://keriwi1.tumblr.com , for scanning translating and editing this story, then giving me permission to repost it!

As per rules of this community, I will post 10 pages out of 30. Disney stories are very fast paced because they are almost always one-shots that have to share the volume with 4-8 other stories, so there is no filler and every plot point has to be addressed and resolved quickly, which is why it was VERY difficult to pick only ten pages. I'll do my best to fill in the gaps with a summary.

Duck Avengers is on a mission and successfully captures a band of thieves, but because he spent the whole night out fighting crime, he gets home completely exhausted and sleeps all morning. When Daisy knocks at the door, she is annoyed to find that her lazy boyfriend is still in bed at midday.

There is a very common trope in Paperinik stories: every time somebody discovers his secret identity, he offers them a special candy that makes them forget.

This trope was widely hated by the PK Fandom because it was wayyyyyyyy overused in frankly annoying and idiotic ways, such as making even characters that would make perfect sense to keep as partners forget their adventures together. Thankfully, some editor must have finally got it through their head that it was fucking stupid to make the person who invents and maintains Paperinik's weapons and equipment forget about their interactions every single goddamn time, so recently there was a retcon that Gyro only pretended to eat the candies. Only took decades. I guess better late than never.

So, Daisy eats one of the candies. But, as those candies had been accidentally stored next to an invention that alters matter, they end up having an unexpected effect...

At first Donald wonders if it might still work out. After all, whether he is dating her as Donald or as the Duck Avenger, he is still dating her, right? They are still engaged one way or the other, so does it really matter if it's the Duck Avenger rather than Donald?

Turns out it does.

First of all, Daisy insists on coming with him on his missions, which slows him down enough to let the criminals escape (although I insist that Daisy is 100% right when she says that if Duckburg citizens are gonna be ungrateful jerks who expect a superhero to solve all their problems for free and then they whine if he stumbles, then they should solve their own damn problems on their own. You tell them, girl!).

Second, Donald becomes upset that Daisy now sees Donald as just a rando, and becomes jealous of his own secret identity.

Donald attempts to ask her out numerous times, but all of his attempts fail miserably with a door slam to the face, partly because of his awkwardness and party because Daisy has no intention of indulging this rando who says crazy things and keeps trying to hit on a taken woman. But when he is despairing, Daisy feels sorry for him, and decides to grant him one single date because she doesn't want him to be completely alone on Valentine's Day.

The date actually goes super well, as Daisy sees the things that got her to fall in love with Donald in the first place. He is funny, earnest, dedicated, with a kind heart, and it's easy to feel relaxed with him.

Donald is almost ready to admit defeat, when he sees the gift Daisy had bought him for Valentine's Day.

Donald is so overjoyed, he jumps into the river to recover the watch.

And thus the story ends, with Daisy remarking that not even a superhero can compete with Donald :)
