In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.

Credit where it's due, our new PM is efficient, after being delayed in taking any actual decisions by a long leadership campaign and then the Queen upping and dying three days into her tenure leading to everything being suspended, it took her only three days to make a deicsion which has pretty much instantly tanked our entire economy.

NASA have tested a method of potentially deflecting meteors which might pose a threat to Earth, but basically crashing a satellite into said meteor. The footage is AMAZING!

The Last of Us TV series has a teaser trailer, as does "Enola Holmes 2 and the upcoming Hellraiser TV series. Talk about running the gamut!

I started watching "Heaven's Design Team" anime, following [personal profile] iamrman's recent posts, and it does seem fun. Sadly that now means I have 318 shows to catch up on rather than 317, but such is life.

Just in time for it's fortieth anniversary, the Dungeon & Dragons cartoon is getting a rather nice looking line of action figures. Nostalgia sells, baby!

So in Disney news, Epcot will be doing a Ducktales 2017 themed "World Showcase Adventure" later this year. According to one of the show's co-creators, Matt Youngberg, the crew of the show was heavily involved in it.

The show has been such a big influence on me and gotten me closer to my friends, and as a result, it's made me seriously consider going on a vacation so I can do it, possibly with a friend who lives near there. I'd like to do so without my parents, so I don't feel like I'm dragging them around when they'd rather be doing something else, but it'd also be my first time doing a solo vacation which makes me rather anxious. (I'm 34, and I'll admit I've been heavily spoiled by the folks.) Plus, well... $$$ is a factor. It's also literally been years since I've had a vacation, and I know this upcoming Christmas season is going to be extra stressful due to work reasons.

They haven't released an official date yet, so there's still plenty of time to think it over, but I just wanted to vent a bit and get it out there.

I still have no idea what this even is. A new show? A gallery exhibition? A Q&A panel? A recap movie?

I keep asking and keep hearing "Epcot World Showcase Adventure!!!" but nobody explains what it is.

Bad on this end. Spent my free time watching stuff. I’ll talk about relevant series briefly.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Finished all the so far released episodes. Story-wise I am not in its target audience, but the animation is gorgeous, and the characters are adorable. The series is the only example I can think of where the super deformed sense of Western cartoons was successfully translated into a 3D medium. I also loved how wildly over the top the powers were.

The Sandman. Watched the first season. Very true to the source material, which is a rarity in comic book adaptations. I especially enjoyed the animated “Dream of a Thousand Cats” story. Best of the fantasy live actions debuts this year, but I think Interview with the Vampire may surpass it. We’ll find out very soon.

RWBY Ice Queendom was a Madoka story with RWBY characters. I enjoyed it very much. Weirdly to say it about RWBY, but this series actually had high artistic values and psychological depth of the characters. Even though what happened on the physical realm was identical to the first volume of RWBY, mentally the characters at the end of anime are at such a different place that the events of volume 3 wouldn’t be possible (not that there will be any sequel, but still). I enjoyed it a lot.

Shadows House season 2 bored me. The adaptation in general was overly fillerific – I think over half of total screen-time was padding. Were I charge I would have adapted the material into a single 13 episodes long season to give it a pacing fast enough to keep the audience’s interest.

Tokyo Mew Mew New was nice. It’s exactly what I expected, but sometimes it’s the best to stay true to source material (like The Sandman example I discussed above) and not try to go to new places (as much as I liked Ice Queendom the animation outside of a few fight scenes was visibly low budget). I loved that with a few subtle changes the anime seems to make Mint and Zakuro a developing couple, instead of Mint’s one-sided crush.

Summer Time Rendering is a great series. The creators knew EXACTLY how to keep the suspense and how to pander to the viewers’ intelligence. I loved everything about the series, the mystery, the characters, the fight scenes, the unique perspective, even shout outs to popular games and anime series. Everybody is a well-written character, including very minor ones like the father or the policeman. Highly recommended.

Made in Abyss season 2 was a sequel to the film trilogy rather than the first season, and you wouldn’t understand the plot if you haven’t seen “Dawn of the Deep Soul”. It’s also… very disgusting, I think would be the most appropriate term to use. It’s as if the creators took all the disturbing elements of the earlier story and wrote a plot using only them. It’s like a nightmare with a strange internal logic, bizzare images and ideas and no end. I liked it, but I think very few others will.

Magia Record the game finished its second arc in a way reminiscent of the anime adaptation but better. While the major characters are now “gone”, their goal ended up being successful, instead of the anime where everybody died. Here, Holy Quintet are all alive, Nagisa is alive, Kuroe is alive, Oriko and Kirika are alive, both Yunas are alive! It’s a bittersweet ending with focus on sweetness. I’m only afraid the game will close servers soon, especially since it’s been very generous suddenly. Well, I’ll be fine with it. I already have all the common megukas and story of the game is saved in multiple videos and text translations.

The fall season I am intending to watch the above mentioned Interview with the Vampire, new Gundam series with a female lead, Muv-Luv Alternative season 2, and maybe Urusei Yatsura remake. Very open up to recommendations.

Some stuff happened, and I decided I need to try and be better . Also I've been ajacent to other people's suffering, which put some stuff into perspective I guess.

Watched the rest of Cobra Kai season five. It was enjoyable, and it looks like their going to wake more of it. I guess that could be okay, it's just that it might be a bit silly if there's an even more climatic karate fight.

And then I brought The Quarry. Haven't played it yet.

I decided to endulge myself and buy the first two seasons of Moral Orel on DVD. Because someone was selling season two on ebay. It was grossily over-priced, but it was the first time I've seen it avalible.

My Justice League DVD's arrived. I'm not saying Dwayne McDuffie is solely responsible for the show being good, just that he wrote the first good episodes.
The CGI opening, isn't great. The models look weird and it's kind of dull.

Watched Scoob. I didn't hate it as much as I though I was going to. It had some real jokes in it.
A word of advice to the corporate overlords who own Hanna-Barbera, children do not care about Blue Falcon.
Hanna-Barbera does not have a vast library of beloved characters. Stop using Scooby Doo to shill for them.

Speak for yourself, I like Hanna-Barbera (mainly Top Cat, Wacky Races and Tom & Jerry, but I am passingly familiar with The Flintstones and The Jetsons). I don’t think they need to constantly tie Scooby-Doo into them, but I do like them.

Watched the Sandman bonus episode - loved the Arthur Darville centric bit, didn't care much for the cat animation, but that was no shocker. Persuaded myself to keep watching TROP and was pleasantly surprised by the 5th episode (although with only 3 to go, not sure how much of anything will 'happen' by the season's end). Loved Andor's opening three episodes, especially the third one. The Rebellion as an insurgency, rather than an 'heroic' force, is a very engaging and refreshing take.

Spent the weekend on a dry stone wall re/building course over in scenic Rutland. Given the longevity of the walls, the work should stand for a good 60-100+ years so I may have unexpectedly built my own legacy! Hard word, but great fun - think I'll do the course on hedge laying next.

DC Infinite for comics...anything good or otherwise to say about it?

I haven’t had it since shortly after it stopped being comics AND tv/movies so any thoughts I have are likely outdated.

The search function is kind of awful.

There are some pretty glaring omissions (maybe Sandman finally got added to coincide with the show). When I left, they were still adding 90s Milestone stuff at an extremely slow pace.

Compared to Unlimited’s three month wait, Infinite’s six month wait seems like a lot. However, considering it now takes DC forever to collect most things (that aren’t Batman) in trade, that six months seems like less of a delay.

At this point its probably a better option than Comixology.

Your mileage may vary (the content and number of monthly borrows is determined by your local library) but I’ve mostly just been using Hoopla to read DC digital trades ever since Amazon ruined Comixology.

This seems a bit out of place and kind of a downer in this post that’s mostly inconsequential nerd nonsense and complaining about evil entertainment corporations but the other day Carlos Pacheco announced he has ALS. I’m a big fan of his work and this hits particularly close to home because my dad has it too. My heart goes out to him and his loved ones. I know links to charities are sometimes frowned upon here so instead I’ll point out that the Arrowsmith: Behind Enemy Lines trade just dropped last week.

https://www.cbr.com/comic-book-legend-carlos-pacheco-reveals-als-diagnosis/

Today is apparently my ten-year Twitter anniversary and … oh god that’s so much time wasted. Speaking of wasted time …

Well, looks like Dragalia Lost’s 4th Anniversary passed without any kind of event. It’s not too surprising since end of service is in two months but the only thing keeping me from deleting it was the hope that I’d get some free summons* (like we usually do every six months) to assist in endgame stuff.

Edit: This morning I saw they gifted us with enough premium currency for 10 summons rather than just giving us 10/day. Holding off on using them because it looks like there’s going to be a slightly better deal in a couple days.
*And the knowledge that some other app will suddenly decide it needs another 7 GB because digital clutter is like real life clutter in that it will always expand to fill the available space.

I don’t really know anything about making video games but watching people who seem to know even less lose their minds over a video game being unfinished when its not supposed to be out for a year or so is wild. I’m trying to imagine literally any other type of fandom reacting the way the GTA “fans” are; “OGM, these comic book thumbnails aren’t even colored! This looks awful!”

RE last week’s She-Hulk: Well, that’s certainly an interesting take on that guest character.

Final Space has been cancelled for a while now and it was removed from US streaming services months ago but the creator confirmed its going to be another Discovery tax write-off when the existing international steaming licenses expire … so those of you outside the US should watch it while you still can if you can still find it.

Speaking of HBO Max, my subscription expired over the weekend. I didn’t have enough time to watch everything even with them “helpfully” removing things from my watchlist but I did burn though several movies last week. Honestly my reaction to a lot of these make me feel better about cancelling.

Earlier I mentioned struggling with the newest Fantastic Beasts movie. I ended up finishing it after all and … good lord is it awful. I’m far from the first person to poke holes in HP world-building but this is just nonsense. I sort of assumed having a normal human baker in on your secret wizard society was supposed to be a, well, secret but there he is in the middle of magic political dinners and magic Nazi rallies. Also, the only memorable creature in this movie about “fantastic” beasts is the Qilin. Not only is it a lot less visually interesting than the Chinese myth that inspired it, it creates a massive plot problem for the movie. “They will only pick the pure of heart to be our leaders. Their judgment as a species is unquestionable. Anyway, we gotta do a shell game so the wrong Qilin doesn’t pick the wrong guy.” (Also, I’ve seen all the HP movies and can’t name one decent person in a leadership position outside of McGonagall eventually running the school that the whole world revolves around so clearly this monster has pretty bad judgement.)

(Yeah, I know the bad Qilin was a zombie but that should never have worked in a world where illusion and mind control are common).

I know is supposed to be a classic but The Great Dictator just doesn’t hold up as well as some other movies I’ve seen from the era.

(Like its good but it isn’t Duck Soup good. As WW2 movies go, I got more laughs from Casablanca and that isn’t a comedy.)

With Spooky Month soon upon us, I wanted to watch ay least one more Scooby-Doo movie. Unfortunately, I’ve already seen most of the top-rated ones (per IMDB) on the app* and the rest are either elsewhere or not streaming at all. So instead, I watched Legend of the Phantosaur because of a five-year-old meme.
*Thanks again to thezmage for recommending Camp Scare a while back.

Idea for an app/website: Maybe this already exists (I know there are apps that let you know the best time to take a bathroom break in a movie and apps that warn you of animal deaths and other triggers) but I’d really like an app that lets you know how long its going to take for the main character to show up. The 2014 Godzilla movie feels like Waiting for Godot … if Godot was 400ft tall lizard.

Maybe it was a delayed Batman Day thing (in combination with the HBO binge) but I consumed a lot of Bat-Media this past week.

One of the last longer things I watched on HBO Max was Batman: The Audio Adventures. I get that they want streaming exclusives (or they did before current management started setting everything on fire) but its weird that this was put on a video platform and not done as a podcast or audiobook. The actual product was great, though. I especially enjoyed this take on Catwoman and Two-Face.

Return of the Caped Crusaders and Batman vs Two-Face are hilarious. I should probably make time to watch the Adam West show again; I’ve seen the movie several times as an adult but I haven’t seen the show since I was a kid so I’m sure I missed the joke (mostly I remember that Rube Goldberg really wanted Batman dead).

I’m conflicted on Joker. I recognize that it is extremely well made and I think more DC movies should try something different but I don’t actually like it enough that I’m likely to want to see it again. Still, when THIS movie makes me uncomfortable, I’m sure its intentional and not because the writer doesn’t seem to realize Wonder Woman raped a guy or the director really wants to focus on Harley Quinn’s ass.

Robins: Being Robin – As a Tim fan, this mini was a real roller-coaster*. It was nice to see that Jason was allowed to be more than “the angry one” though Damian just comes off as “the entitled one”. Steph is also there. Also, Dick’s man-bun is a crime.

*Between this being all over the place, the writing on the current Young Justice mini, and the art previews of the upcoming solo book …I’ve really got to stop using that cursed monkey’s paw to wish for more Tim stuff.

Robin V2 I Am Robin – While I generally enjoyed this, I’m still not crazy about Conner Hawke being in a death tournament (and this series really should have been a single trade). I know a lot of these characters come back for Shadow War but I hope they don’t vanish afterward like Damian’s supporting cast usually do.

Robin and Batman – It’s a little messed up to me that the evil Batman from the previously mentioned Adam West cartoons comes across as better than regular Batman in this comic…but honestly this take on Batman isn’t exactly new and at least Bruce is presented as being in the wrong.

On a semi-related note, it looks like online discourse has shifted from “why doesn’t Bruce Wayne attack the root causes of crime instead of beating up the poor and mentally ill” and back to “why doesn’t Batman kill the Joker”. I’ll admit I’ve engaged with the first in the past but I’m kind of sick of both. I don’t see the first one as actually being about Batman; putting aside that it ignores things like the Wayne Foundation, I see it more as a commentary on the ethics of being a billionaire. The second one is the kind of base misunderstanding of the character that keeps giving us bleak garbage like the Snyderverse.

And I continue to maintain that the implausible part isn’t that Batman and co haven’t killed the Joker. The unbelievable part is that some random Gotham cop hasn’t done it.

Edit: Hey Icon, you should probably watch this car commercial from Brazil...

I'm still boggling at "GRAPHICS ARE THE FIRST THING THEY FINISH IN A VIDEOGAME!!!"

It takes literally years to make a videogame. In the case of AAA games, it takes about a decade How can anybody think that the developers would let graphics be ten years behind?

Robins: Being Robin – As a Tim fan, this mini was a real roller-coaster*. It was nice to see that Jason was allowed to be more than “the angry one” though Damian just comes off as “the entitled one”. Steph is also there. Also, Dick’s man-bun is a crime.

I still don't understand why I haven't heard a single peep about this series.

I was waiting for the series to be over so I could check if it was good before putting the trade in my wishlist. But I heard nothing. NOTHING. I was half convinced it had been cancelled or delayed due to covid or something.

How is it possible that a mini about all five Robins didn't even get a single post on scans_daily?

Well, anyway, Zach, would you say it's good? Should I buy it?

I was in a bit of a Harry Potter mood and was tricked by the trailers into thinking the film had anything to do with Hogwarts. I’ll give the movie this, it’s better than The Crimes of Grindelwald. But where I liked the first one and the second was awful, this one was just SO. DARN. BORING. My one solace is I didn’t spend money on it.

I loved Joker! I hope the next one’s good and it’s not a Wonder Woman 1984 situation.

Heck, it’s probably not even meant to be out for the next two or three years. These things take time. I also find it hilariously awful how everyone was up in arms about “rah rah women protagonist, more like WOKEstar games amirite? SJWs claim another victim!!!” until it turned out said female protagonist was hot, now it’s all “OMG she THICC”.

So, I was checking if the bookstore had Dark Knights of Steel for sale.

I haven't decided if I want to buy it yet, I first want to make sure that the series is not just an excuse to kill off characters as Elseworlds so often are. I haven't been reading the posts on scans_daily because I want to avoid spoilers in case I do end up buying the trade. But I just need to know: does this series kill off a bunch of characters, or is it a fun romp where I can be reasonably confident that my faves are safe?

Anyway, I was checking this book store. Put "dark knights of steel" in the search box.

The result I got was unexpected.

HOW ARE THEY EVEN CLOSE??? ^^"""""

Apparently they went with "dark," "steele" for "steel" and "night" for "knight."

Here are some of the things I have been reading this week.

Avengers Epic Collection: A Traitor Stalks Among Us. I needn't have worried so much as Mantis only takes a meaningful role in the very last issue.

I have gone on several times about my dislike of Roy Thomas' run, but the issues collected here weren't too bad. He managed to keep the sexism to a minimum. That being said, there was one moment that particularly stuck out for me. Hawkeye was hitting on Scarlet Witch and said something along the lines of 'let's forget this Women's Lib bull and get together'. Oof.

One moment from the Englehart issues stood out for me as well. Wanda's relationship with the Vision becomes public knowledge and he becomes the target of a hate group. They're not even your typical racists or mutant hating bigots, they have a bee in their bonnet about robots. What could have been a decent story about bigotry was immediately rendered ridiculous by the people outfitting them with goofy looking suicide vests and silly hats with plungers on the top that they pressed to blow themselves up.

Thor by Jason Aaron: The Complete Collection. Say what you will about Love and Thunder, at least we were spared the tiresome mystery about who the new Thor was.

I i laughed ar Dario Agger yelling at the likes of Wilson Fisk and Sebastian Shaw and calling them worms. Out of the three, who is dead and who is doing better than ever?

I wish I could have enjoyed the Shi'Ar getting their butts kicked during the Asgard/Shi'Ar war, but the Phoenix was there and this being a Jason Aaron comic, you know Quentin Quire isn't far away.

Batman: No Man’s Land Vol. 3. Nothing specific to say here, just that Cassandra Cain is best Batgirl. I especially liked the friendship she had with Azrael, but that doesn't come until the next volume.

Wonder Woman by George Perez Vol. 5. Again, nothing really specific to say here. Everybody knows Perez's run on Wonder Woman was great. The issues collected here are leading up to War of the Gods. Might also be notable for being the first Post-Crisis appearance of Doctor Psycho. Your mileage may vary.

Huh, the CW has made it easier for me to cut back on TV-watching. They canceled a bunch of shows I liked, and aren't airing the remaining ones 'til after New Year's. Batwoman was hitting it's stride and Legends Of Tomorrow was abruptly canceled, leaving a cliffhanger ending. Ugh. So naturally they were dumped.

DC superhero shows are fading away on the CW. Too bad. A lot of people didn't like them, but I'm way beyond worrying about what other people think I should watch (not meaning people here). The shows entertained me, so I'm annoyed. 🤨

Same. I enjoyed all the CW DC shows and watched them regularly for the most part. Supergirl got not so good in the last season (I still have like 8 episodes I haven't watched) and despite really trying, Flash was unwatchable this last season. I restarted episodes and even skipped storylines but couldn't complete it. I'll read the recaps and keep my fingers crossed that next season is better.

I just saw the bit about giving Heaven’s Design Team a go in the main post. Serves me right for not reading the whole thing properly.

I can't say how happy it makes me to see that somebody values my opinion enough to actually follow my advice.

It's a pity that there are only 13 episodes and no sign of a second season. At least I have the manga to get through.

Ot is hard to say who my favourite character is. Anybody except Jupiter, really. I find his preoccupation with eating the animals the team designs to be pretty gross. He comes off like one of those rich jerks that gets off on eating rare animals.

Wasn't able to say this last week because I was too busy, but a streamer I followed did their first subathon and I kind of dropped in and out of it due to driving back from a vacation.

It seems Sonic Frontiers has turned its reputation around from the first gameplay reveal.

There was some big news on Tumblr, but I've read that people are misinterpreting it.

Found out that Greg Pak wrote a James Bond series for Dynamite Publishing. Did anyone here read it?

Also, does anyone else have to do a "Prove You're Human" test when they come here on mobile?

Life is a bit rougher right now. Mom's recovery has a new kink in it. Looks like I get to spend another holiday season dealing with that.

Etsy has done new horrible things to their payment system that I'm not looking directly at right now. I'll deal with it when I get to it. That was one of my main incomes right now - so I'm thrilled.

In happier news - started playing Slime Rancher 2 - which is a beautiful delight.

Apparently there are already rumours of no-confidence votes against Truss.
And she's not even been in the job three weeks.
Though given things it's unclear if these are actual no-confidence votes, hypothetical NCVs or 'hypothetical' votes.
But regardless. Only three weeks just to get to talking about being booted out.

Anyway, onto less serious topics...

Playing some Skywalker Saga. Slowly inching towards the precious 100%.
And now convinced some of it's bugged because the challenges aren't finishing.

After just a few episodes, the final batch of Power Rangers Dino Fury has mysteriously vanished off the TV schedules.
Maybe someone jumped the gun?
Still no word f' Netflix when they're showing up. Mildly irritating.

Speaking of which, it's... very odd that the show is almost over and the merchandise quotient has been staggeringly low.
By which I mean little to no sign of zords 'round these parts.
I don't know if that's because of knock-on effects of 2020 or behind-the-scenes stuff but it is weird that there's no zords in brick-n-mortar stores.
(I checked Amazon, but I don't entirely trust Amazon, and I'm not paying over a hundred quid for plastic dinosaurs, archosaurs and a smilodon no matter what.)

Finally got around to getting the Epic Collection of Under Siege.
Enjoyable story.
Zemo's a bastard.
(also, the character assassination attempt on Quicksilver included. Whoof. I don't even like Quicksilver, but wow.)

Watched the first episode of that Andor.
Meh.

Skywalker Saga was bugged for me when the story mission on Takodana wouldn't load. Thankfully, an update fixed the bug.

Aww yeah, Under Siege! Now can you see why I joke about Zemo having a habit of falling off things?

I get the impression that certain writers (coughSteveEnglehartcough) had some sort of beef with Quicksilver. I too care little for him, but it was difficult to watch the way he was treated at this time.

Some big news just popped up about the next Deadpool movie from Ryan Reynolds' twitter account.

Huge, you might even say.

I finally found time to watch Thor Love And Thunder and found myself enjoying it. It's not the best in the franchise, but it was fun. I have been catching up on my reading, Morbius, Joker, and Sandman and I have really been enjoying the She-Hulk Attorney At Law. That's about it.
