Though I question the importace of Slade as a villain, this seems like an interesting choice, and nicely contrasts Dick and Slade, who are a far better set of mirror images than Slade and, say, Batman or Wonder Woman. (And Superman would be a very unequal power balance for a final conflict)
One an optimist, one a pessimist
One defined as a good son, the other defined as a bad father
One became a hero to seek justice, and because it was the right thing to do, the other became a villain for money.
One brightly coloured, other other in darker shades.
They're Nightwing and the Slade Yes Nightwing and the Slade One has a great ass, the other's inane To prove his merc-y worth He'll kill the multiverse They're Nightwing They're Nightwing and the Slade, Slade, Slade, Slade Slade, Slade, Slade, Slade
That just gives me a mental image of Slade going to I-Max theaters and such, wearing those glasses they give out. He's sitting there with his arms crossed, glowering at the screen while everyone is cheering and hollering. "Oooo, it's coming toward us!"
Then over time, he gets so fed up with it he decides to destroy the world. Put it in darkness so that nobody gets to see the hand reaching out of the screen.
(And Superman would be a very unequal power balance for a final conflict)
I dunno, we've seen in the past that an individual's power is insignificant in the face of the Great Darkness, up to and including the Spectre's. But there have been in-universe references to Superman being the keystone of DC's reality to match his metatextual importance to superhero comics as an industry. I could see the writers doing a symbolic Light/Great Darkness, creation/nothingness thing with him and Slade representing the forces behind those concepts.
But it's better for Dick to be the standard bearer, as he and Slade have so much history.
I want a longtime before there's another event. If they have to justify a big crossover, I want there to be no big bad. We just see what heroes do on vacation: Batfamily road trip, Supermaily at a pottery class. No more Cosmic gibberish.
INFINITE CRISIS had scenes like this. Kal-L and Superboy Prime saying “This is a terrible Earth and the heroes are terrible people.” In retrospect, it is less the villains having a point and more DC insulting people who didn’t like Identity Crisis.
Given that Infinite Crisis specifically used Dick Grayson as Batman's multidimensional moral benchmark comparator, and Kal-L admitted that, okay, you got me, your Dick IS just as neat as mine (and I am SO glad they didn't phrase it like that because the innudendo potential is off the charts), not sure that's quite how I read it.
Nothing sticks forever in the DCU. It exists in whatever pocket of Hypertime/Omniverse/Whatever terminology we're using this time which had Kara as Supergirl growing up and working with Dick whilst he was still Robin, which is something that SHOULD have happened, but even in the Silver Age didn't.
And if we're doing a New Teen Titans Robin vs original Deathstroke, I think we have to base that off the Perez run looks.
I hate that Deathstroke is being advertised as the cool villain. I hate that Nightwing is advertised as the goodest purest hero. I wish both of them just died and stayed dead for some time.
