They actually did get married pre-Crisis, though Iris died/was believed to be dead for a while, which led to Barry and Zatanna getting teased. (In fact, I believe Iris's death was what led directly to the Trial of the Flash, which led to Barry and Iris living happily ever after in the 30th century right in time for Crisis on Infinite Earths.) As a matter of fact, she's tagged as "Iris West Allen" right here on scans-daily.
I actually recall a seen where Iris thinks Lois is getting too close to Flash and calls her "a super-hero groupie".
Iris was murdered by the Reverse-Flash, via a vibrating karate-thrust to the brain. Her biological parents sent Baby Iris forward in time with the help of John Fox, causing a bit of a time paradox but it all worked out eventually.
Then Barry tried to marry again, to somewhat of a nonentity named Fiona Webb, who Reverse-Flash tried to murder on their wedding day (that's kind of his thing, murdering Barry's ladies). Barry broke Zoom's neck just before Zoom could reach her, killing him, and _that_ led to the interminable Trial of the Flash.
Ain't it the truth? Sometimes that was by design, though.
The fate of the Flash was known well in advance by Cary Bates, longtime Flash writer. Essentially, he was told, "Don't do anything complicated with Barry Allen because he's a goner in CoIE, and we'll need to kidnap him for that." Great... except he still had a year-plus left of Flash comics to write, and in a comic-book universe, that kind of involves complications!
So the Trial went on and on and on and on and on and on, with the League coming down hard on him, his would-be lawyer sending assassins to attack other lawyers, jury hypnosis via Abra Kadabra, plastic surgery via gorillas, the gooniest-looking villain ever in Big Sir, a time-traveling Iris, a reprint issue out of nowhere, and FINALLY, a month of reunited domestic bliss a thousand years in the future.
She went cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs from the strain of it all, and was institutionalized. She recovered just enough to attempt to testify at the Flash's trial, went back into shock from remembering Barry and the events of the day, and went back into straitjacket-land.
At least there were no refrigerators in her padded cell.
I started readin the Flash in the lat 70;s and early 80s and BOY that was a trip.
Like that time Barry's father was in a car crash and technically died on the scene, and before he was revived his body was possessed by the ghost of the deceased super-villain, The Top.
He then spent some months getting close to Barry in that guise, whilst secretly plotting with his former lover, the Golden Glider (Captain Cold's sister, and a psychopathic ice skater who used a range of lethally gimmicked "gems" and skates which generated their own own ice so she could skate through the air) to kill Barry and then possess HIS body...
And that's not mentioning the time the Police Chief at Barry's station realised he could channel "excess" power from his pacemaker into his body, giving him superhuman strength and endurance as "Captain Incredible"
