So, some connectivity issues where I am right now means that I'm posting this within a whisper of it being too late for the UK to arrive on December 25th. And apologies to those further east along the time zones.

And that being the case, I hope no one minds if I more or less repeat last years message as I think it still holds true.

Scans_daily does not ascribe to a singular festive tradition, as we have many community members who ascribe to different traditions, and many who actively reject any, for many and varied reasons, and we wish to be respectful to all. However, for the Northern Hemisphere "Halfway Out of the Dark" is more of a fixed event than most, so if we have to go with a name, let's go with that.

For some it can be a happy time of family get togethers, and for others it can be a time of excruciatingly difficult family get togethers, and for others still, it is a be time of loneliness and sadness.

But rest assured you are never alone, there are always people you can speak to if you need to, and remember that asking for help is never a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength and determination.

And we'll still be here, sharing scans and community, as best we know how, any time you need us.

We'll be having our review of the year later in the week, and our hopes for 2025 too.

But in the meantime, may you find peace and happiness where you wish to find it, whether through faith, friendship, camaraderie or just knowing you are NOT alone.

From Icon_UK on behalf of the S_D Mod Team

PS: Yes "Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl" was an utter delight! Those in parts of the world who didn't get to watch it on the BBC, do try to see it on Netflix, it is a perfect hour of Aardman Animation at the top of their game.

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than me.

We'll have a separate seasonal celebratory Mod Post later.

The edited, colourised Doctor Who story, "The War Games" was a bit of fun, especially the... "augmentations" to the Second Doctor's trial, which had some neat little jokes added in, and long standing theory about the War Chief getting some musical support.

Star Treks: Lower Decks ended it's run on a high, I think, with a lot of fun jokes, and set up an interesting new concept should anyone wish to pursue it later on. I will DEFINITELY miss this crew; three parts Starfleet super-science competence, one part The Muppet Show levels of chaos.

Must keep this short due to family comittments, so have fun all!

Somewhat to my surprise it seems that Netflix are showing an Asterix and Obelix: The Big Fight adaptation next year and there's a trailer which looks very promising.

Star Trek Lower Decks penultimate episode was a mind-blowing experience! When I say that the on screen canonisation of Garak/Bashir (albeit in a slightly multiversal way) was NOT the surprise of the episode (and we knew about the multi-Kim's from the season trailer) but trggvat Wbyrar Oynybpx onpx nf G'Cry jnf trahvaryl nfgbavfuvat. It also managed to make some very trenchant points about multiverses in meida, and yet one characters explanation of how they used them was possibly the most Star-Trek-like thing I've seen expounded on in a very long time. I will miss the hell out of this show!

President Biden has granted a pardon to his son Hunter, which he had previously said he would not do, and I suspect he would not have done had the Democrats won, but given Trump has just nominated someone he pardoned (for fraud and witness tampering) to become the new US Ambassador to France (and who happens to be his son-in-laws father) I'm not sure there's much of a counter-argument.

We note the passing of Morgan Lofting, a name you might not recognise but who I suspect, amongst many other roles, was the cause of any number of adolescent... realisations as the stern, bespectacled, leather-clad Baroness on the original GI Joe cartoon.

An article I found, and if I have to live with knowing this is an article which exists, so do you, about the making of the American phenomenon; the Folgers Incest Coffee Ad

Slightly on topic, but DC Infinite is opening up to France, Italy, Germany and Spain.

Just before Christmas, the BBC will release a new edit of "The War Games", coloured and trimmed down from 10 episodes to 90 minutes. It's especially notable for being the last Second Doctor story (as well as the final story to feature Jamie and Zoe as companions), and introduces the Time Lords as the Doctor's people for the first time. It was famously still being written as it was filmed, so there is plenty of padding that can be trimmed, but even some, from somewhere over four hours to a hour and a half should be interesting.

The first two episodes of "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" has arrived on Disney+.

The movie of "Wicked" has arrived, and seems to be being very well reviewed, though I do find it's lack of acknowledging that it's only Part One (despite being longer than the entire stage show) of a two part adaptation, to be curious.

Apparently, Captain America: Brave New World, has gone back for yet more reshoots, though it's launch date of March next year remains as is.

On the other hand, a special Star Trek TOS video has been created with William Shatner, the estate of Leonard Nimoy and, believe it or not, 87 year old Gary Lockwood, providing mocap for the return of the character he played more than 50 years ago; Gary Mitchell.

A prequel series to the recent Dune movies has premiered: Dune: Prophecy. Though as it's set 10,000 years before either movie, "prequel" seems a little inadequate as a description.

Eight years ago, the Mod Team composed a message for the community after Trump won his first term in office.

I think it's safe to say that none of us expected to have to write one about his second one.

But that's where we are right now. Trump has won the Presidency and his party has control of the Senate, though control of the House of Representatives has not yet been decided.

The implications of all this are as yet unknown, but after a campaign based in large part on sexism, racism and othering, he looks to expand his already appalling record on anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ policies amongst other concerns.

This is, quite naturally, causing a lot of stress and concern in marginalised communities.

It would be too glib to say "You'll get through this" as if it were going to be easy, chances are it won't be, and that is unfortunate, but remember that the s_d motto "It's never just you" has more than one meaning, that you are not alone and "WE will do everything WE can to get US through this"

In the meantime, some self-care suggestions:

Keep going... do it out of hope, out of community spirit, out of concern for others, or out of pure damn spite if necessary. (That last one is not good long term, but for short sprints, works fine).

Reach out to your support network, be it family, definitely-not-family, in person or online. You don't need to be alone to deal with this, others will be sharing your concerns.

Reach out to helplines if things get bad, there is no shame in asking for help.

Turn off social media for a while (avoid X like the plague), and no doom-scrolling!

If you need screentime, watch a favourite show or movie... yes THAT embarassing one... ESPECIALLY that embarassing one.

Create something! Create art, no matter how small or amateurish it may feel; write, draw, craft, cook, sing, play an instrument!

(And if you want to share some scans, that would be cool and creative too, but that's perhaps our vested interest speaking)

Stay hydrated. Eat something. Go for a walk in the fresh air. Remind yourself that the world contains beauty.

And we repeat the message we gave in 2016:

The Mod Team wish it to be known that Scans_Daily has, and always will be, a haven. We will challenge and call out examples of bigotry and hate, and will never endorse them.

We support each other during such times. We are a community: We are women, men and the glorious spectrum in between and beyond. We are cis, trans, gay, straight, queer, asexual. We are from all over the world, young and old, with faith or without, comic geeks united. We are your community and we are stronger because you choose to be here!

Stay safe, share scans, and as be excellent to each other!

As anyone not living under a rock will be aware (and boy, do I envy you that lifestyle by this point) the US election is today. Please, if you are able, vote! And at every level available to you too; national, local, major role or minor role, it all matters. By every poll, it's too close to call (implausible as that seems as an outsider) so don't for one moment believe your vote doesn't matter.

Sadly, the world lost a music legend Quincy Jones at the age of 91, a man who tapped into and shaped the musical zeitgeist of multiple decades and did it with STYLE; be it composing and performing the seminal 60's soundtrack "Soul Bossa Nova", producing Michael Jackson's "Thriller", composing the soundtrack to the original "The Italian Job", or scoring "Roots", and by all accounts was a remarkable man in his own right, who always spoke passionately and eruditely about the power of music.

Those in the US who are eligible to vote, if you haven't already, please check your local polling station opening times in advance, so you know where and when to go to vote, and remember you can, in most states, ask for a provisional ballot at the polling station.

A Happy Hallowe'en to those who celebrate it... which I imagine is most of us, in some way or another. Might make a post on the day for that.

Star Trek: Lower Decks started it's, currently, final season, with a two episode drop. I'd missed these dorks so much!

I got around to watching Deadpool and Wolverine, which was more fun than I'd expected (I mean I liked the earlier ones, though I always thought 2 was a bit mean spirited to some fans with the X-Force bait and switch). There was a LOT going on, much of it probably incomprehensible to anyone who wasn't a major comic nerd, but it is nice to see a spandex superhero movie which isn't ashamed that it's source is a comic book.

Watching "Agatha All Along" I was reminded that A) Joe Locke looked unfeasibly good in the Maleficent outfit, and B) THIS is why you hire Patti Lupone to appear in things!

As the world watches a 78 year old set up a staged "shift" at a closed McDonalds, make bizarre claims about the size of Arnold Palmer's private parts, and make distrubing comments about dealing with "the enemy within", we wonder "Exactly how is this a close race?"

Finally had some spare time and caught up on "The Dead Boy Detectives". Whilst I think it did strayed rather far from the original concept, in order to set up a long form plotline, it was enjoyable, and certainly had earned, I would have thought a second series at least.

The first episodes of the new Ranma 1/2 anime (a remake of the original) have dropped on Netflix and looks to be a pretty much scene for scene remake retaining the charming Rumiko Takahashi art style. One wonders how some of the shall we say "aggressive sexual dynamics" will play thirty plus years after the original, as Ranma 1/2 was rarely what you'd call subtle. Though, as a screwball comedy, it was never meant to be.

Don't know about anyone else, but "Agatha All Along" remains entertaining and suitably warped, and I genuinely have no idea how this will end, which always fun.

"Agatha All Along!" debuts this week, to lead up to a Hallowe'en finale would be my guess.

And "LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy" was an utter joy. A four part miniseries which managed to tell a touching story about two brothers, the Force, a multiverse we never knew about, the fun and perils of nostalgia vs the perils and fun of trying something new and moving forward, whilst at the same time being delightfully silly throughout... except for Darth Jar Jar, that just made too much sense to not be canon. (Also for allowing Mark Hamill to express what I suspect was his entire frustration with the Sequel Trilogy in one scene, which was impressive)

This mornings media is, quite rightly, full of coverage of the passing of James Earl Jones at 93 who, through hard work and talent, overcame a profound stutter as a child to become one of the defining actors of his generation and definitely one of the most recognisable voices in media history.

Mentioning also the passing of Rachael Lillis, not as well known a name in voice acting perhaps, but she was the voice of Misty, as well as Jessie in Pokemon for the first several seasons and so did entertain millions too.

And a shoutout to Lenore Zann, who voices Rogue in X-Men 97, and who wore one of Rogues Hellfire Gala outfits, designed to Luciano Vecchio, to the Emmy's!

The Paralympics are running in Paris, impressing the hell out of anyone

"The Dead Boy Detectives" has, unsurprisingly given it is on Netflix, been cancelled after one season.

"Terminator: Zero" launched on Netflix and managed to remind me of any number of 80's anime which were based on the Terminator. And also has one of the most egregious examples I've evern seen of "cyborg killer with one of those whirly-gun arm thingies spitting out enough projectiles to demolish a mountain range every few seconds, managing to utterly miss the lone human target less than twenty feet away over several minutes"

Likewise "KAOS", with Jeff Goldblum as Zeus in a modern world where the Greek gods are not only real but never went away. (By which I mean that it launched on Netflix, not that it reminded me of 80's anime which were based on the Terminator though, in fairness, I've not seen it all yet)

"Sonic the Hedeghog 3" got a trailer

As did Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story
