Legends from Darkwood pt 3: Raynd the Feared

This post follows off of part 2 of our Legends from Darkwood series.



Brave idea in hand, Rose marches into the Old Man With Map tavern and restaurant again the next day.


It is worth remembering she is filthy rich. Unicorn money, you know. Is there anything they're not good for?

The flier is a success, and at the scheduled time the adventurers line up to check out the job, couth and uncouth alike.



As weird as this guy is, she's not discouraged. Until... he marches off at the mention of Raynd's name.

Several other adventurers have similar reactions, until one explains why.




Big Bear says some not-nice words to Raynd on the subject of her hogging all the unicorns.






...and then she says some not-nice words to them!

After hearing the story, Rose thanks the adventurer, wiser for what she's up against, and tells him to send the next one in. Unfortunately, there are no more, so she gets dejected for awhile, not sure what to do next.


The Raccoon Girl adventurer (no, she never gets a name) who was indirectly responsible for the idea in the first place shows up and asks about the job. Of course, she gives the same general response when she hears Raynd's name, but when Rose starts to sniffle she asks why a little girl wants to off someone anyway. Looking around the room, she quickly figures it out.



A plan is hatched, and Rose is a little more knowledgeable.

Aaaaaaand my interest in Rose plummets through the floor. I have a rule: I will not put up with protagonists who are ridiculously naive. Particularly teenage girls in a medieval setting who somehow don't know about sex. Presumably because they were raised by SINGLE-CELLED ORGANISMS.

We *know* she was raised in a ridiculously sheltered life in a big mansion by an overprotective father.

Rose is a mix of the naive and pragmatic.

And still, you have Raynd and Racoon Girl and one or two others as protagonists :)

So there were servants. Who talk. Often about sex, as many people do. And she appears to have a basic grasp of what is involved in normal economics, which means she's probably found a book on animal husbandry somewhere. Maybe even, since they appear to have STAPLES, a book about human sex. Or a book of fine art. Some classical literature. Has she ever SPOKEN to another woman in her life? I object to the endemic notion that the "rear your girls in a box sheltered house and never teach them about Teh Sex because it will spoil their girlish dumbness purity" method WORKS. Because it DOESN'T. And in a pseudo-medieval setting, people didn't TRY. It's a Victorianism.

The scene doesn't necessarily mean she hasn't heard the word sex or anything, just that she didn't know the word virgin or that since violence failed she'd be trying to solve her problem with sex.

I can see a lot of young kids in her position going "Oh my." to the prospect of trying to solve an issue by getting someone laid.

Well since she is being trained to kill unicrons which one needs to be a virgin to do it makes sense for her Father to go to exteme measures to shelter her from that kind of thing, lest she get ideas that might ruin all that training.
