And does a very passable impression of the Hulk?

J'onn is recounting to Kyle the (imaginary) time Booster and Beetle hid all of his chocos stash. The rest of the team know what's going on but when J'onn asks them they wuss out of clueing him in (I recognise Guy but who are the females?)

Photobucket

J'onn's sh*t-eating grin is pure gold! It soon disappears though when he discovers there aren't any available packs of chocos within a one mile radius because Beetle and Booster have bought them all...

Photobucket

So much love!

And speaking of Kyle and J'onn, a request! Can anyone please tell me what arc/title/issue this scan is from?

[personal profile] kingrockwell has already kindly suggested Doug Mahnke and Joe Kelly are involved - going on this and the sketchy results of a google search, I think it may be JLA:Obsidian Age? Or am I totally off base? Help! Is Obsidian Age worth getting anyway?

They are delightful characters from a delightful run of comics, well worth the checking out should you ever get the chance. Well, the first volume's a bit dry, but from there on, it's awesomesauce on a biscuit of yay.

My icon is disappointed you didn't know them

They'll also be two of the main characters in JL:Generation Lost.

Supposedly Dini is writing a mini featuring the two of them as well.

Ice is Guy's girlfriend, for further clarification. Fire is her best friend.

Actually, I just checked and I can bend that way fairly easily. It should be noted that I'm hyperflexible in most of my joints, though.

Chiming in as another person who finds that position not too difficult or uncomfortable to be in.

I find it amazing that people can lie comfortably with their crotch and back both pointing up, honestly. If he was standing in that position, people would be screaming "LIEFEEEEEELD!"

With the ground supporting you, especially adding in the elbow, it's easier to twist that way.

It's quite uncomfortable to be twisted that far around standing up unless it is done only very briefly in the process of stretching for most people, true. But partly laying down, with the ground giving support and one or both elbows to balance with, it's not actually all that awful a position. I can personally go into that one (how he is specifically, not standing up) without injury. It doesn't stay comfortable for long unless you've stretched really well first (after a little bit, you will be changing positions to something that works better long-term), but if it's just for a minute or two, it is completely anatomically feasible. I mean, I'm kind of bendy, but definitely no contortionist, and I actually have very mild scoliosis, and I can bend like that without an issue. There's a difference between "that's kind of funny looking and may cause cramping after a while" and "holy shit, that requires broken bones or otherwise not normal anatomy".

The main problem I see is that his upper and lower halves just don't match up at the waist - look at the center line of his spine, which should continue down to showing us his ass "face on". Instead, his glutes are almost straight down against the table. It's like you cut him in half, gave him a quarter twist, and glued him back together.

Hm... it does look a little off. *tests pose* When I do the pose exactly as shown, it takes a conscious effort to keep my whole ass flat on the ground; the natural way of doing it comfortably requires that one either lifts the right side of the ass partly off the table or points the right knee out to the right rather than straight up or partly in. Shall we say that the pose is completely plausible, but not represented as accurately as one would hope? Still, it's a difficult pose to draw, and perhaps not the easiest to find a good model for.

I think the slightly jagged shadow on his butt is meant to suggest that he has one glute on the table and the other slightly raised. That's how I saw it!

Perhaps, but as I said, that spine line should continue down right into the "crack" - instead, there's a distinct jog to it. Just above the waist, his spine is facing us square on; below the pant-line, it's not.

Bad Art.

Obsidian Age it is! At the beginning, when Kyle is having weird dreams.

And yea, it's worth getting, Kelly had some nice hits during his run and Obsidian Age was definitely one of 'em :)

Yeah, it was the start of the Obsidian Age storyline. It wasn't the best JLA story, but it was pretty decent (and Kelly only went downhill from there, so yeah).

The one after wasn't good, but Trial by Fire was pretty good.

Kelly, when on the ball, IMO did stories as good as the Morrison and Waid parts of the run. He was just less consistent.

You don't know Bea and Tora?!?!? Uh, welcome to scans_daily? :)

That second set might give someone else the warm fuzzies, but it makes me think of J'onn as John Carpenter's The Thing, starting with the kennel scene. Although he also kind of looks like the green James Arness as the original Thing From Another World, now that I think of it.

Max's "SPLOOT" of blood at the end of it all is probs my favorite part of this, though. It's the icing on a cake of delicious crack.

Why is Ted dead and Max evil. GOD I MISS THIS.

While I'm not the world's biggest fan of JLI, this issue features some of my favorite moments with them - especially the bit where J'onn's cookie addiction takes on a corporeal form and begins possessing various team members and causing THEM to crave things. My favorite? Max Lord, who, while under the influence, spouts off one of my favorite lines of all time: "I want Superman to respect me, and Batman to do what I say, and Wonder Woman to... I want Wonder Woman to... Oh, how I want Wonder Woman to!"

It's also kinda interesting in that her explanation of it makes perfect sense - if you live up in the frosty, seal-infested northlands with little else around for a food source, you are inevitably going to be eating large amounts of sealflesh as part of your regular diet. Doesn't make it any less funny, of course, but few of these funny lines actually make sense when they're deconstructed.
