benicio127: (Lois love)
[personal profile] benicio127 posting in [community profile] scans_daily
Just picked this up yesterday, though it came out last week. Jess&Luke are one of my favourite couples and I could probably just read an entire comic of them talking and doing stuff. I noticed they are having a conversation I've been sort of having with myself and others after recently getting engaged...

And obviously I don't mean taking on the superhero name of my fiance, lol, but rather the last name! It was interesting to me as more and more women in North America choose to keep their last name, hyphenate and generally just choose different options rather than take on someone else's last name; as well as a growing number of gay and straight married couples in Canada (and I suppose some states in the U.S. that allow gay marriage, which sadly aren't very many) decide to create a whole new name out of both last names (ie. John Fawcett and Tom Wood became John and Tom Woodfawcett). As well as the practice/tradition of who takes on whose last name varies widely in other countries (ie. Spain, Mexico) (I've put A LOT of thought into the whole last name thing, OK)

ANYWAYS....! ON TO THE SCANS! Approx. 4 pages.

Luke makes the initial suggestion.

And Jess is swearing because a Doombot comes around and spoils their sexy dinner date. And then at the end of the issue, Jess makes an announcement:

Luke's mug, OMG. Truth: I actually showed this last bit to my fiance and was like: See what Luke did? That's what not to do.
Ahhh I love these two. :D

It should be interesting when Danielle becomes a super-hero.

"Danielle. Power Gir...wait."

Consider some of the alternatives; Power Lass? Powerette? Powerina? Powerella? A lawsuit from DC and boob window jokes might be preferable.

Poor Power Girl. Wonder Woman's TV show gets her life, and Jessica Jones (who may have her own TV show) gets her name.

I loved this issue so much. I like how every now and then Bendis sneaks an Alias-reunion-esque issue into one of Marvel's best selling on goings.
I want that mug. I may need to have a child to validate owning one, but I want it.

I don't like it and I hope she finds her own name.

I didn't like it in the Incredibles, either. And I'm pretty sure I've heard Sue Storm being called Mrs Fantastic, and I didn't like that either.

*shrug*

Yeah, it kinda removes the whole autonomy and creativity for the Superhero.

WELL LUKE, THEN WHY DON'T YOU TAKE ON HER NAME INSTEAD? D8<

Random fact, although nowadays the wives take the name of the husbands when they marry, back in old times here, whoever had the higher ranking was the name for the couple. So if the man was higher, they would say "wife of blah" and if the woman was hire, the man would lose his name and become "husband of blah".

Haha, poor Invisible Woman. It's not just the cape name thing, either. She often gets the "Sue Richards" treatment, which is like the single worst example of name-change in anything anywhere that I can think of. Like, okay, shock surprise horror, I'm not a big fan of women changing their name for their husbands period. But when your maiden name is Susan fucking STORM, of all things, you do not give that up! That is the coolest shit you will ever know! "Storm" as a name is objectively superior to "Richards" on every possible level. What even.

Totally agree. There are norms and legal reasons for changing your family name, but how many married superheroes change their name to reflect his/her partner? Not every facet of your life has to be linked to your SO, you can stand on your own in other ways.

And when did Helen Parr change her superhero name? I thought she just stuck with Elasti-Girl...

I knowww, I feel like I'm reading a storyboard or something. I think a major pitfall writer-artist team comics often fall into is TOO MANY FUCKING WORD BUBBLES.

Cut out some dialogue, Bendis. I promise you, ever jewel-like phrase you have polished to perfection is actually not necessary for the scene. It sounds crazy, I know, but MAYBE you should consider editing?

Well, she doesn't like Jewel or Knightress anymore. Power Woman is emasculating and dorky, but usable.

Or they can both just wander around in civvies with civilian names all the time, until they get sued into the poorhouse.

I don't get why she doesn't just go back to 'Jewel'. It's a perfectly good superhero name, and we know she's already got quite a reputation based on that period of her life.
Also, I would NOT want to be that waitress.
