I'm going to guess - based on this series so far - that whatever process he underwent to control him, it involved nailing him to a cross.

Maybe the helmet is supposed to be a crown of thorns. Or at least horns.

The green is actually not new. It's a leftover from when he became the Spirit of Corruption. Limbo's version of Ghost Rider.
