This was such an amazingly bizarre run. I love Roberto as the guy with The Plans and The Money, as he was just so much fun in that role. I think Ewing hit the perfect balance of those elements, as opposed to other depictions which make Roberto a little -too- smarmy or cocky or careless.
(It's a nice progression of the character when you consider how he idolized Magnum P.I. back in the 80s.)
It was a good Roberto, building on what Hickman did with him in Avengers.
Which made his early Krakoa switch into "dudebro" all the more irritating. And baffling, since Hickman was the one who did it. (Would've thought he would've stuck with some semblance of the characterisation he'd laid down. Most writers usually do.)
You know... there's something to be said for the whole Sam/Bobby dynamic these days, when done right. Bros for life -- one married with a kid, happily settled down, the other immensely rich and carefree, seeking adventure and often dragging his pal into wacky hijinks, kicking and screaming.
It makes sense-- Sam comes from a large, tight-knit, loving family and he lost his dad early, so he gravitates towards a relatively settled home life and attempts to live up to his dad's legacy. Bobby didn't have that same experience--he's always been a swashbuckler and adventurer who bonds tightly to his friends while trying to overcome internalized guilt and self-worth issues (if you think back to his origin, to some of his early evaluations, his stint with the Fallen Angels, and his complicated relationship with his dad...)
So would I like to see a Sunspot/Cannonball bromance adventure from the right writer? Hell yeah. :)
I still love Ewing for looking at the various baggage Thunderbolt Ross had been saddled with, shrugging, and inventing a fresh clean clone of him with all of the attitude and none of the hackneyed storylines.
There was so much about this run that was enjoyable.
The silly captions, Songbird, Toni, Ava kicking all manner of behinds, Billy and Teddy actually doing stuff (and the nice little flash forward of them just being quietly retired and happy with the Space Sword in the umbrella stand)...
Shame it got dragged into Standoff and then Civil War: Revenge of The Fallen.
Never quite took to the subplot about Clint feeling old. (oohf, questioning a Ewing decision. That felt rough.) But then Bendis got his grimey mitts on him...
Avenger-5 sucks the gamma out of him, turning him back to Todd Ziller, normal American marine. He then reappeared in U.S. Avengers looking to get repowered ("So I can show everyone my tail! For America! I definitely don't have underlying issues or anything!")
Then he might've reappeared in some tie-in to an event.
Songbird went on to be in the Zub Thunderbolts, which... was definitely a series that happened.
