As you'll recall, the JSA split up to deal with both Extant and Kobra. While the Kobra mission went well, they came home to find Metron--who for the New God nobody likes, sure gets a lot of guest spots--telling them that the universe was about to be reset by an insane, power-hungry... ok, you know where this joke is going, fuck Dan Didio and let's move on.

Extant attacks, and his ability to age anyone into dust is pretty hard to counter, but...

Of course, since he has time travel, Extant can just regroup and come right back.

Metron is the last one standing, and he goes to recruit the rest of the JSA.

So Fate goes to pay a visit to Mordru.

The JSA raid Extant's fortress and fight their way through to...

Now with Dove in their ranks, the JSA confronts Extant again.

The universe begins returning to normal, but Extant makes a run for it.

Now let us never speak of him or Armageddon: 2001! ever again.
(actually found a copy of that issue in question in a charity shop once. You could actually see the precise moment the execs got involved...)
Or dwell upon the fact this series ain't done with convoluting things with Dawn by a long shot.
... sometimes the lengths Geoff Johns could go to are actually a little scary.
