Issue #1'd ended on that mercenary, Slade, meeting whom the warlord Vandar Adg'd sent him after - the boy Alec, somehow brighter than gray in Jarnlund.
Alec was in the custody of Slade's ex-wife Adeline - Slade and Adeline were opposed, a second antagonism atop the one already between them.
That didn't stop Slade from helping Adeline, wounded by associates of Vandar's (whom Slade had helped before breaking away from), and Alec back to the inn they'd been staying at.
Adeline awoke to find her wounds dressed and Slade opposite her.
" What the Hel have you gotten yourself into, Adeline? "

Slade offered his help.

She set off with Alec.

Across open land, they came upon closed land.

" .. he destroyed them. "
Adeline recognized the authoritative speaker.

" You're taking Alec over my dead body. "
" Acceptable. "

(She switched sword and axe hands.)

Rose batted aside Slade's thrown axe - he, having been following behind, leapt into the fight.
" .. this is going to hurt you..

Rose landed away amongst the icethorns, leaving Slade with Adeline (and Alec).

" Old habits die har- "

" Old habits do die hard, father. " said Rose, teeing up a killing swing over Slade, wounded atop dead Adeline.

Color surged from Alec.

Rose was put out of the way again.

(Pagecount's just under 8 of 24 from the main story of August 2024's Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #2 - there's an unrelated backup about DKoS' Aquaman.
Issue #3 came out this week - it's explicit about which character Alec, the boy whose Green dispels the effects of perpetual frost, maps to.
Writing's Jay Kristoff, art's Tirso, and letters're Wes Abbott.
Publisher's DC.)
