scans_dailyIssue #1087'd ended on the decapitation of the Shadow Angel, puppet populist revolutionary set up by the Orgham matriarch Dariah to psychologically cement her family's control over Gotham City, by the Joker's Daughter.
#1088 opened on Duela Dent sighing over the Angel's inadequacy as a threat to the status quo from what'd been his broadcast pulpit: " You deserve better, Gotham. "
She gave them better: " I went out and planted some funny explosives in ordinary neighborhoods tonight. "
(She's disrupting a supervillain scheme to impose order with a supervillain scheme that'll cause chaos.)
The mentalist Shavhod was caught in the gaze of the Ten-Eyed Man, whose perceptive aid Batman'd enlisted in #1086.
" .. and your lies will fall apart. "
Shavhod was broken, like Dariah's plan to climax the Shadow Angel's revolution on his public execution of police commissioner Renee Montoya.
She half-knew the latter - she fully learned it when the successful delivery of Montoya into the Orghams' hands turned out to just be a distraction of Batman's.
The Bat progressed through Orgham men towards the Reality Engine that was the family's instrument of control.
Neang had been sent to deal with the artificially induced cold affecting the Shadow Angel's azmer-possessed ranks, hobbling those spirits so susceptible to chill.
Mr. Freeze, who'd induced that cold at Batman's request, had froze Neang and his men in their tracks.
(Neang's abilities are tantric.)
" .. I couldn't predict which of you would come after me..
" So I prepared for every eventuality. "
There was just Gael Tenclaw the werewolf, stalked by Two-Face who had a grudge and two guns loaded with silver bullets.
Tenclaw got the drop on Two-Face..
.. and silver too.
One of Two-Face's goons helped his injured boss away.
(" Woulda kept tossing.. " does sound like a Two-Face who'd cheat his compulsion, but it can be read as either wryness or an acknowledgement of there never having yet been anyone who didn't try to find a loophole in their self-imposed strictures.)
" The rest is up to the Batman. "
The Batman had made it to Dariah, who met him sword in hand.
" You hunted Gotham's darkness. You purged her shadows.
" You did not seek to save this city, as your son did.
" Your pawns are gone. Taken by Gotham's vengeance..
" .. In time, Gotham will be all she is meant to be.
Batman turned to the door to the Reality Engine.
" It won't open. "
(The Scarecrow's role in this story is still " plot device battery ".)
(Like most of her minions and her son, Dariah's powers physically twist her body.)
The backup's the revival of Arzen, Dariah's son - set up in #1084's main story.
He'd been his mother's loyal servant, a genuine believer that the Orghams' work would better Gotham - the betrayal that'd provoked her to poison him was rooted only in the regard he'd developed for Bruce Wayne during his time in Gotham.
The backup doesn't parallel him with Talia al Ghul on that axis - it instead does so on their relationships with their parents.
The revival - a test of " synthesized " Lazarus Pit waters - brought Arzen back.
" .. my mother.
" She.. murdered me. "
