DC's I Know What You Did Last Crisis #1

During Infinite Crisis. Dick grayson goes investigate a storage building.

Conner then proceeds to unexpectedly judo throws Dick into the glass multiverse shards.

The scene then transition into a basement of a house.

I guess Dan dido finally got his wish to technically somewhat kill Dick Grayson during Infinite Crisis.

It's been twenty years, man. If you had killed him off, he would've been back fifteen years ago, tops.

"Okay, we've borkered this continuity too much again. Someone press the reset button."

"But we fixed all the Crises... Crisises? Crisii? By killing Nightwing."

"Do I look like I care? Make him alive and make things go boom."

Generally speaking, " dying eternally " is better than " living through a Nightwing ongoing ".

Well, this seems singularly mean spirited.

If, by that, you mean "Pisses on Connor's legacy by condemning Dick to an eternity of multiversal suffering and death" you would definitely be right.

This is the sort of story where someone discovers the terrible lie upon which their perfect society is built upon, thus leading to a grim and gritty search for the truth, culminating in a massive "no one wins" battle between those who want to see things put right, and those who would uphold the utopian status quo no matter the cost. Death, betrayal, friends against friends, families split, legacies tarnished, and you just know the final battle would be Tim vs Conner with Cassie torn by her loyalties until she finally comes to her senses and stabs Conner with one of the shards, thus restoring the timeline while establishing this as just another alternate Earth to be resisted somewhere down the line.

We could call it Crisis in Paradise. Or Families in Crisis.

Didio's weird fixations aside, this story is a real missed opportunity. I mean, forget everything you might know about any behind-the-scenes plans from the 2000s that this story reflects. There's still an interesting idea here, right? The terrible, terrible possibility that the best possible outcome might involve the horrible sacrifice of a good person? Utopia founded in an unjust loss--that's sort of a Christian allegory, right? It's certainly a lot more provocative as an AU idea than most of the Earths DC pitches. So this story could've been gripping--or at least awful in an entertaining, I-can't-believe-they-agreed-to-publish-this way.

But instead it's boring as all get out, just a giant pile of expository dialogue that never ends. Whatever DD learned at the head of DC, how to do effective scriptwriting wasn't it.

The worst part is, the world Konner describes actually sounds pretty good to me!

So much to unpack here.

I get why they let Didio write books when he was an executive and he was technically a writer before all that but I don't get why he's still working now. He's not Paul Levitz; he doesn't seem to have much of a fan following.

Also, I quite like both characters in question but ...

Dick - a character that is second only to Superman in terms of inspiring other heroes - can only unite the heroes by dying. I'm also a little fuzzy on how Dick's death would have prevented Final Crisis or Flashpoint because I'm not sure how much influence Nightwing has on Darkseid or Barry's decision-making process.

As mean-spirted as this was toward Dick, it almost feels meaner towards Conner. In the time since Infinite Crisis, Conner has died at least twice, been erased from existence (or at least overwritten by his Nuu52 counterpoint), been replaced by Jon, lost in the Multiverse, and recently got a mini about how he feels unneeded.
