Even given the nature of comics and his treatment the last few years, this seems a bit much.

I can't help but feel like this was conceived with Ultimate Spider-Man's existence in mind. "Hey, there's a book with a happy Peter Parker, so let's just go wild on this one!"

In Spencer’s run there was also the bit where Kindred kept on killing Peter, sending him to Hell, resurrecting him and repeating the process.

I gotta say, I'm not even particularly convinced this is agony for Peter. Oh, he says it is, and I'm sure it's physically painful, but...taking on a lot of physical pain in order to save others? How is that not every day of Peter's life? I'd be surprised if he didn't have a boner right now.

...this is about that time Spider-Man told him off to his face, right? He had just saved Doom's life and so he was offered a boon. Spider-Man told him where to stuff that "boon" and Doom decided his gift would be to let Spider-Man live after saying that.

But Doom never forgets a slight.

Doom's moral position in this story is unambiguous - he's telling Spidey " As a smart person, I'm not going to exert myself to do the thing necessary to save the world. I'm going to make you do it instead. "

Apparently I'm out of the loop. Doom is sorcerer supreme? Is Doc dead again? Didn't he just come back to life? And Clea was in charge?

It's all fallout from Blood Hunt. Strange had to give Doom his title for Doom to save the world; Doom then reneged on his promise to return it.

Out of curiosity, why doesn't Matt's suffering seem to be as annoying to fan's as Peter's?

It's more annoying to me, personally. Peter is at least better at finding the funny side of things, most of the time.

This whole story seems unlikely. I refuse to believe Doom would ever willingly gift someone with "Reeds."
