The bigger twist would've been if they'd gone to the Negative Zone and run into someone who wasn't Blastaar or Annihilus.
Remember when Annihilation had all those beings and species in there that weren't just Blastaar or Annihilus?

Well, to broadly summarise without giving too much of the issue away:
Captain America and the Human Torch try to find one of their old pals from the Invaders (and also beat up Nazis).
It does not go well.

This team composition has a lot of green and exposed flesh.
Also a lot of strong people.

So I think some of this is a carryover from when Buscema was drawing the book, he notoriously preferred drawing fantasy over superheroes (Though I think that was mostly because he hated drawing cars and skyscrapers), and a lot of the lineups had a mythology/fantasy bent. And it might also be, with so many superhero teams around, and the AWC kind of having a lot of the "career Avengers", that's how the book tried to distinguish itself. (Byrne stated a lot of the lineup was mandated to him, I think it was a heavily editor-driven book until Harras started writing it.)
