...no. No, I cannot accept an Apocalypse that says, "Give X-Factor's leader a cigar." I was introduced to him via the X-Men cartoon in the 90s. He'd never say that.
Definitely agreed, it sticks out like a sore thumb, to the extent one might think it was an authorial hint that this wasn't Apocalypse at all, but... it was.
... Apocalypse has always seemed like one of those characters Claremont wasn't interested in, in the slightest. (See also, the embarrassingly ridiculously easy way he's killed off in X-Men: The End.)
You can really tell which bits were definitely the 'mont's contributions and which weren't. Like just what happens to Medusa. And then, Crystal.
In this story: Apocalypse brainwashes several Inhumans. Over in Uncanny X-Men: Most of the X-Men are brainwashed by Shadow King. And a few months later, as his swansong for the X-Men, Claremont writes a story where Magneto... brainwashes a lot of the X-Men because he thought Moira had brainwashed him. ... While the circumstances of his departure were pretty acrimonious, creatively speaking maybe taking a break from the franchise was not the worst idea.
Not seen here: Mysterious time travelling gal Askani calling Nate her brother and Scott her father, only next issue she'll turn around on this and go "oh, when I said 'brother' I mean because he's a Mutant and all Mutants are my family, doh-hoh-ho." Probably because the idea of Scott and Jean having an actual baby would totally go against the whole point of getting rid of Scott's baby.
Everyone making references to Dark Phoenix Saga, because they're on the Moon and all.
