'Tec 860: Renee's story

Sorry for the lousy scans, I couldn't save this scene till anything better came along. I have been waiting for this scene for so goddamn long I just had to scan it myself as soon as I got home from the shop!

Had to cut a highly slashy first aid scene, but I've got my priorities, dammit! Renee and Hel, apparently as acquainted out of costume as they are in, head to North Carolina and the lighthouse to catch up with Tot and compare notes.


Rucka's always shown a fascination with the possibility that Tot was Vic's dad, and that second to last panel is a glaring tease toward that. Next month's Question #37 is supposed to focus pretty heavily on Tot's reaction to Vic as a Black Lantern, since the story of Renee dealing with his death has been told already. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw more references to that idea, or even a resolution to it.

Moving on,

Is that just a hint of jealousy in the fourth panel or is it just me? Also colors the early scene differently, at least for Hel, considering things she might not know about Renee at this point, but she has a lot of friends among the spandex-types.


Third panel, "I guess he succeeded", I could go on and on about that one, but I think I've got a fic I've thought about writing in there somewhere, so I won't. The photo of him is adorable and makes me wish Cully had done work with the character before (and reminds me how awful his hair looked all through 52!), like if we could somehow align the stars for a Question: Year One (speaking of Cully and Year One's, Black Lightning: Year One came out on TPB last month and it is really great!)

The last panel makes me want to hug them all. Tot needs a hug so bad.

Must resist urge to ship Helena/Renee ... And I don't think Vic ever looked as good as he does in that picture.

The one I'm thinking of was a 3-parter. The 1st was Vic/Helena, the 2nd was Vic/Helena/Renee, the third was Helena/Renee

The other problem I had with that one is that it acknowledges the theory that Vic got cancer from his gas and treats it like canon, which it just isn't. I kind've hate that theory, but won't be surprised if BL!Vic brings it up in Q #37, since Tot dealing with his death is supposed to be a big part of it, but Rucka's expressed distaste for it himself, so I'm hoping they put it to rest if it does come up.

That one was short, but sweet in a twisted sort of way, being that the given kink was that each was reminded of the one they really wanted by the other.

I actually preferred DCU Vic/Helena, but mainly because I like prefer DCU Vic and Helena.

Does Helena know that Renee's gay? I ask because the 'were you lovers' question seems somewhat disingenuous coming from someone who knows her at all well.

I think that lines implies that she doesn't. I don't get the impression they're recent acquaintances, knowing each other just long enough to be working this case together, in and out of mask.

Uh, not to nitpick, but I think you mean that they ARE recent acquaintances, don't you? If they're not recent acquaintances, then she'd have had time to find out those particular details.

Hey, no worries. I frequently answer my E-mails in the morning, when I'm still half-asleep - which may explain why some of my online conversations last as long as they do; it takes people two or three clarifications to clear up my initial sleep-blurred blunders.
