Can someone tell me at what point writers started thinking "The more evil someone is, the more depth they have?"

Because yeah, I ain't seeing it.

I believe at this point many writers are actually trying to undo that, to the point they're going to far.

Exactly, so what's interesting about seeing it again like this? Having him display SOME emotional connections would be vastly more interesting.

To Superman and others, sure. But Pre-Crisis, his relationship with his sister was one of his main redeeming values, and his desire to keep her away from his life at all costs.

Excuse me: Lex is not just A villain, but kind of THE villain. This is completely in character. The point of the villain in any story is to do things like this. That's also what makes them more fun to write: they're not obligated to be reader-identification figures.

Reader-identification or not, villains need depth to be interesting. And not curing his sister because Superman is out there somewhere...isn't depth.
