Superboy is sort of his son, so systematically crushing his hopes of finding a new family in front of him to get back at him for picking Superman as a father figure instead isn't really random fucking around like people seem to be implying. He Kon, here's your aunt and cousin! Let me make them bitter and angry so you feel like you've failed them in every way and conveniently distract you from whatever Brainiac is up to and the same time.

No, it's obsessive fucking around that's making him act stupid.

Superboy had no idea Brainiac was up to anything until Luthor did this. Now he knows that two of Superman's greatest enemies are working together while Superman's away. There's no way Superboy's not going to get involved. Plus there's the fact that Superboy has the resources of the Bat, Flash and Wonder families right on hand to fuck with Luthor's plans.

Of course, maybe that's what Luthor intended. But I think it's more likely just bad writing.

Except doing something stupid out of personal pettiness has been part of Luthor's character forever, so I'm not sure why you think it's bad writing to keep that part of his personality and relationship with Kon. Lex is perfectly aware of how to play with Kon's emotions and that as long as he had a hostage, he'd never risk it by going to his friends for help.

Also, Brainiac is using Luthor to plan a strike against New Krypton, so threatening them with any of those other hero families is pointless since the Kryptonians have never asked them for help or even tried play nice. And if I remember my super books correctly, Superman is well aware that Lex and Brainiac are working together so he isn't really revealing anything more than Lex's desire to stomp on the feelings of the son he thinks betrayed and failed him.

But I guess keeping track of other books' plotlines is just bad writing.

If he wanted to play with Kon's emotions, he only had to pretend to be nice.

If he wanted to use Kon, he could have had him collect something he could use to hurt people.

Hell, he could have done both of those at once. If I'm smarter than your genius, you're doing something wrong. Yes, Luthor's pettiness is part of his personality, but it's not this stupid a kind of pettiness. It's a very effective kind.

Also, the fact that the Kryptonians wouldn't have gone for help is what makes it stupid. Now the Earth heroes may get involved even though the Kryptonians never would have asked to be helped.

Are you serious? How are the earth heroes going to get involved? New Krypton is an entire planet of people with Superman level strength and advanced technology who thinks humans are worthless. I guess the Justice League could wave their fists in frustration while the Kryptonian Army kicks them off their planet, but I don't see how that's going to even phase Brainiac. But I guess the Justice League has nothing better to do than sit around beating their heads against the wall instead of fighting actual crime on Earth.
