Switchblade Honey was a space opera graphic novel by Warren Ellis, which he described as "an extended gag at the expense of the colourless, clean SF of the big media. The anti-Star Trek, if you like."

He's sent to prison, where he stays for two months before being recruited for a very special mission...

Ryder explains why humanity ought to be saved:

Ellis goes a bit into the inspiration behind the book:

He watched a lot of the original series as a kid, though he claims that's only because the family TV barely received any channels, not because he especially liked it.

And judging by the text piece above, he's at least seen some Voyager and Next Generation.

Doesn't it seem like he's protesting too much about the Star Trek he's watched?

Yeah, I find it amusing that he's making fun of his girlfriend and her incomprehensible excuses for watching when he was apparently in the same room unable to make himself look away. That must have been one big baby to pin two adults helplessly to the couch during her naptime.

I found ST: Voyager to be mildly diverting pap when I first watched some of it years ago...since then we got cable and the internet, so situations like that don't have to happen anymore. But for some reason, my son utterly loves that show and watches the DVDs my husband bought him obsessively. So nowadays, I know the show far better than I ever wanted....and I STILL don't understand why anyone else has watched enough of it to want to make fun of it.
