Yikes, Victor's huge!

If I remember correctly, Doom was able to escape Hell because Thor's hammer created a doorway through dimensions as it fell after his death.

Here's him attempting to pick it up,

As an extra, here's snazzy Doom in his about town clothes.

As a request, anyone got any scans of Doom actually being a competant/popular ruler? I'm sure they exist, and don't just go into the "execute the first one to clap" school that Millar had.

Sorry, the tags are kinda wonky on this post, can someone fix them? :(

I was about to say, competence had not that much to do with Doom's return from hell, he kinda lucked out there.

Personally, I like the interpretation of Latveria where Doom's scientific prowess provides a high standard of living, but the regime is still an opressive one and and the population is fearful of him. He's a super villain after all. His acts of kindness are probably more erratic and motivated by flights of fancy, like that of any nobleman.
As always, Doom follows his own rules.

Although, according to Brubaker's mini he might as well be a good and loving ruler for all the difference it'd make - thanks to Mephisto, as long as he fails to reclaim his Mum from Hell, the populace will grow to hate him a little more every year.

unless Triumph and Torment is out of continuity, he rescued Mom a long time ago.

That's how I see Doom's rulership myself: he's the guy who's read Machiavelli, and while he does make sure the people of Latveria fear him, he also ensures that the love him as well, by waving the carrot and the stick in equal amounts.

Pah! Doom does not read books by failed men who wrote them in exile as a way to curry favour with the new powers that be! Doom writes his own books and then reads them.

Bah! Doom does not write books because all shall heed his words and commit them to memory or face the consequences!

Plus, he totally ships Harry/Hermione.

Marie Antoinette: "Let them eat cake."

Victor von Doom: "You will eat cake! So speaks Doom!"

Advantage: Well, duh.

As the brochure says (In some ASM issue I think): "Latveria: Where life is good-- by royal decree!"

Still, it does kind of show what kind of Badass Doom is; I mean he escapes from Hell, HELL, and his first order of business is to kill the guy who took over in his place, and get himself a bath to wipe off the demon stank.

I'm still wondering what he did with the Buffalo Bill suit.

I think that largely depends on one important question:

Is it washer safe?

Cause I'd imagine a human leather suit would be dry clean only. Does Latveria have a dry cleaning service? Can't imagine many people need their Leiderhosen dry cleaned. Do you dry clean Leiderhosen?

Wikipedia sez "Traditionally, lederhosen were worn for hard physical work, since they were more durable than textile clothing and easier to clean." So, they must do something. As far as human skin goes, I don't think that Thomas Harris really included much in the way of information on caring for human leather in his book, although he had some disturbingly specific things to say about its curing and tanning.

Ya know, Waid's Doom was far from perfect, but I really liked how he had Reed actually take apart Doom's castle, weapons, etc instead of sitting around waiting his return.

IMO, it was a great set-up that would allow us to see Doom rise to the top once again.

Instead...he just walks in and everything's the same. Not lazy at all...

You fail to appreciate the genius of Doom planning for the futile actions of that simpleton Richards. He made spares of everything.

I seem to remember hearing at some point that the populace of Latveria loved Doom, which had less to do with Doom being great and more to be with the next guy in line being a pretty epic douche.

Yeah, a Latverian revolutionary movement overthrew Doom for a while and put a new guy in charge. Within a couple of years he proved to be a corrupt douche, and they wanted Doom back. He may be a despot, but Doom isn't corrupt in a petty way.

Actually, Doom was always presented as being a benevolent-ish absolute ruler. So long as you appreciated everything Doom gave you(and he was generous to his people) and never defied him--which for most day to day wouldn't even be an issue, after all--you were fine.

Ya'know, I kinda felt Doom vs Asgardians in the last few issues of Thor was a little weird, as in "why does he suddenly care about gaining the power of a bunch of old gods? He's got all these newfangled cosmic players flying about!" But putting the escape from hell thing in adds a little context.

Good point. Considering it was an Asgardian relic that allowed him to escape from Hell in the first place, that might just be motivating him more than a search to replicate the gods' immortality (especially since he already effectively possesses access to immortality through Ovoid mind-transfer techniques, Arnim Zola's cloning technology, his own Liddleville technology, and probably all sorts of mystical methods).

Fedora = the ultimate disguise. I was surprised that during the CW, the Secret Avengers didn't walk around dressed in those - Tony would never get them.
