If there were good characterization, there'd be no reason for anyone to distrust Max, because HE'D BE A GOOD GUY.

Can someone turn back the clock to when JLI was current, please?

Either your memory is spotty or you didn't actually read the JLI stories. Max was always a greedy bastard that nobody fully trusted. The only difference now is that he's an outright antagonist.

No, because not everybody likes your particular favorite.

I guess this doesn't exist any more, then. All righty then.

It de facto doesn't, since Max was still written as a greedy dick afterward.

Mmm, greedy dick is one thing, believing in the League doesn't necessarily conflict with that. But it also doesn't directly tie into what we've had of him since Identity Crisis, which still seems sudden and random.

Not denying that. I'm just disputing the idea that Max could ever be fully trusted, that's all.

(Admittedly, back then, you could trust him to not intentionally kill a superhero, but still.)

See, that's the thing. I can see him wanting to do good in the world, and believing in the League, and not minding if he has to bend a few rules and maybe use his power to nudge things in his favour along the way, but still be essentially a good guy. You can do a lot with a character like that.

But the jump to homicidal supervillain who wants to kill all the supers and would personally pull the trigger on someone like Ted...that's out to lunch. It's way too big a leap, and while I can believe a man can fly, my credibility just won't go that far.

And here's the thing...him wanting to do good in the world is still partly in his character. As I recall, he joined Checkmate because he thought the superheroes could no longer be trusted to be in control of things...and when you consider some of the Super-Buddies more wacky antics, he's not completely far off.

There's a difference between being a bastard and being evil.
