Some cute Dick/Babs scenes

I've always loved this pairing since I saw them flirt on Batman: The Animated Series.

I know it gets hate here on S_D, but whatever! I don't care, I still love them. So do a lot of other people, just seems it's not the S_Ders cup of tea, I guess. Sad, because they're wonderful. <3

These are two scenes from two different books. One's from the Batman: False Faces tpb, which I'd recommend picking up if you're interested in exploring the several different sides of Batman's persona: Batman, Bruce Wayne and Matches Malone.

The next is from Gotham Knights 36, which I found when I was going through and looking for the scenes of Dick's adoption. It once again brings up how Babs questions whether what they're doing is right and of course, the idea is there that she questions why the Joker is still living. (She doesn't specifically say it in these scans, but she has questioned it on numerous occasions).

I love Babs' "bring it on" face here. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind why Dick finds her so sexy.










Panel two is pretty hot, I must say. 


Now from Gotham Knights 36. This is cute beyond all words.

















I love that they talk about all of these things like normal-ish people. I hope DC doesn't forget about their engagement and just... pretend it never existed. One day... one day, I tell you! Enter your cut contents here.

Two things: Is it the same artist on both those sequences? (For the most part, I think I like it. Especially on Nightwing.) And, what was it Dick realized about Bruce at the end of the first sequence?

No, actually, I'll have to check the artist on the Gotham Knights story. The False Faces story is Scott McDaniel.

Dick had realised Bruce had gone too far into his Matches Malone persona, I believe. (Haven't read it since October!)

They are very cute together. And I love seeing them interact. It's just they seem better as friends or brother/sister. (Except for the sexy times 'course. But even those I found not to have much spark).

And I'll say it again, I miss Devin Grayson's Gotham Knights.

I dislike them as a couple. Mainly because so much of their relationship has been written as her being a big old stick in the mud, and acting like a disapproving mother more than a girlfriend.

I know that's only one or two writers' interpretations of it, but it's the one that's stuck with me. So it's how I always view their relationship.

Fortunately, it does seem like DC is trying to move them into the 'friends zone' as of late.

Scott McDaniel is a great artist for movement and action, but he cannot draw people. I looks like Dick and Babs were supposed to look out of breath in that one, but instead they just look vaguely inhuman.

She does have a bad case of funhouse face in that "sexy close encounter" panel, doesn't she? Either that or she's having a stroke.

Actually, the latter may be more accurate, since she seems to be missing part of her skull. How mudfortunate.

Dick and Barbara. Dick and Starfire. So hard to choose which I like more. Both pairings work so well.

Dick and Starfire every time for me, Dick and Babs just seemed too... I dunno "dating your cousin that you also work with". Like Donna and Dick, there's not enough difference in their personalities to make it that interesting.

Being with Babs just keeps bringing him back to Gotham, reminding him it, and the past, and Bruce. Kory was about opening new horizons, new worlds and probably a number of new positions only achievable when one of you is a flight capable felinoid and the other is the worlds greatest non meta acrobat and gymnast.

In a meta way, sometimes I feel like Dick's like one of the few Gotham characters who is actually a real person in the universe surrounded by other characters that occasionally get sort of meta-texty. Like here, the only reason Batman seems to make it worse is that he's fictional and they need to write villains for him to fight because he's awesome.

Also, since we just saw that Bruce panel where he was all "I wouldn't know how people feel about their parents--since I don't have any!" I can't help but see that Babs sometimes seems just as sensitive about being Batgirl, especially if Dick brings it up. Even though it's not like she was Batgirl when she got shot.

Man, these two don't get nearly the love they deserve. I know people complain a lot of Dick 'n Babs not having any spark, but god, to me that is the spark. They were best friends before they ever had sex, and they'll still be best friends in thirty years whether they ever have sex again or not. It's hot that they can sit in a car and hold hands and play six degrees and talk about life and the universe and it doesn't have to be about anything but that, in that moment. It's so rare in comics to ever see realistically adult, mature, and genuinely loving relationships presented this way. I definitely miss them quite a bit.

But I'm sure they'll be back at some point. It is comics, after all.

I know. It's funny because I see a lot of good lasting marriages where the partners aren't just lovers and everything is hot and sexy all the time, but they are best friends. The sex isn't what makes it last: it's the communication and the consideration, like what Babs and Dick have. (Then again, I like to think Dick and Babs have great sexy times. :-D)

And yeah, I believe there have been some writers or editorial direction that has certainly not served them well. But I still love those two crazy kids.

Although the pair had had their moments, I always saw their relationship as too filled with their hang-ups to even work. It all seemed too forced, and that annual didn't help any. I find the Dick/Kory ship interesting, because they're so different, and without the complications of them being both affiliated with Batman.

That Nightwing Annual was good except for the part where Dick was all... "Thanks for the hit n' run! Here's an invite to my wedding! LOLOLOLOL" ...I honestly thought that part was terrible and very OOC of Dick to do.
I'd like to think he's been raised better than that and has much more consideration than to pull something like that.

Dick/Kory is acceptable, but I'm with Team Babs/Dick. I appreciate what some people have said -- Dick seems to adore Babs, and Babs seems to be holding something back. I'd like to think that even though both have been able to legally drink in any state for a while now, Babs just hasn't shaken off her first impression (no way, he's just a pup) yet?

Thank you for these. Sitting in traffic will be a lot easier to take knowing that even Nightwing and Oracle have been there at least once. I was literally out loud at "I'd teleport one of us". Agreed about the hot panel, it still works even if the art is a little wonky. And blue eyes Babs in both, yay!

IDK, I always prefered them as friends and no matter how hard I try, I can't see the chemistry at all, not even when the author has written it in capitals letters under my nose.
But it's okay, to each his own! =)

First off, boy do I miss the days when the various batkids would get together and worry about Bruce and other bat-family members.

Babs/Dick:

I have to say I do like Babs and Dick interacting. I love both characters, and they're a lot of fun. But there's a number of things that wind up being problematic in the way their relationship is sometimes portrayed.

I hate the way they're played up as being these long-suffering destined-to-be-together lovers, as if they're Clark Kent and Lois Lane, because they're really, really not. Playing them that way tends to diminish their respective relationships with Starfire and Jason Bard.

I find it especially annoying with respect to Babs, because she hasn't dated nearly the number of people Dick has, so it makes her look like she just sits there and pines for Dick when they're not together. It makes for a kind of unevenness that makes me uncomfortable for some reason.

I also dislike the sort of soft-retconning done to remove their age difference and make it seem as though they were totally in love and dating when they were Batgirl and Robin. These scans don't reflect that, thankfully, as the examples I'm thinking of (that infamous Nightwing Annual and the "Omens & Origins" from the last issue of Birds of Prey, Vol. 1, come to mind) have mostly come after that, I think.

Their relationship, and especially the way it played out in the BoP/Nightwing/Gotham Knights era, only really makes sense if you take it that there was some mutual crushing on each other back in the day, but they never actually dated. So those feelings and their growing affection, respect, and attraction to each other came to a point where it was too much for them, and they both wanted and needed to give it a try. Add to that Babs's hesitancy to enter into a relationship for her own reasons, and all the usual bat-angst the both of them share, and it was complicated to begin with.

I think they're better suited to being good friends and part of the same team/extended family. I loved that bit in the last issue of Nightwing where Dick took Babs skydiving. That was pretty adorable and sweet. I really wish they got a chance to interact more as friends and allies.

To be fair there was some mutual crushing, the Nightwing Annual used "footage" from actual Batman Family comics, especially the "Dick declares his undying love for Babs... only to find she's asleep... or is she?"

Dick crushed hard on Babs for quite some time, and she liked him, but not in THAT way, so it might work from Dick as the younger guy POV, but it doesn't from Babs.

I pretty love anyone with Dick. He's the DC bicycle in my head.
