First post! Long time lurker from the LJ-days, first time poster on Dreamwidth. If I'm doing anything wrong here, please let me know and I'll fix it asap. It's still Halloween, and I can't think of a better time to post some Scary Godmother!

First, I have to apologize for the quality of the scans. I'm scanning the pages directly from my book, and the book is as flat as I can possibly get it on the scanner bed without completely messing up the spine. The blurry edges cover up some dialogue, but it's still mostly readable, I think. If anything needs clarified, I can go back and edit. I had to make the scans a bit bigger than usual, since the text is so tiny.

Anyway... 11 and a half pages from the 40-page Scary Godmother: My Bloody Valentine special, definitely not safe for dial-up!

First off, Scary Godmother has some visitors...

So what's the problem? Ruby and her husband, Count Max (an olde tyme Nosferatu-lookin' vampire who we'll meet later) have had a fight. Ruby was moving furniture around so that she could install their new entertombment center, complete with scare-e-o, skelevision and VCR - I warned you guys about the puns - and Max has thrown a fit, thinking that such modern 'gee-gaws and doo-dads', as he calls them, are too undignified for lords and ladies of darkness. ("Gee gaws and doo-dads? Do all lords of the night have such a regal command of language? How dignified!"). Ruby calls Max old-fashioned, Max forbids her to install more gadgets, and by the end of it, Max has flown out the window in a snit and Ruby's gone over to Scary Godmother's place with her son Orson in tow, looking for a shoulder to cry on.

Hannah and Orson get along fine, despite Orson sometimes getting the munchies. There's actually a cute subplot about the kids making valentines together while their parents are busy, but I had to cut it out, this post is lengthy enough as is.

This is Mr. Pettibone, AKA Skully, Scary's roommate, a skeleton who lives in her closet. He recommends a makeover!

Meanwhile, Count Max has gone looking for relationship advice. His first stop is at the professor's place.

The professor points out the flaws in Max's argument in an exchange that got cut for length: If Ruby still drinks blood, commands creatures of the night, sleeps in a coffin and shuns the daylight, how does a bit of modern technology make her less of a vampire? Max leaves, more confused than ever.

His second stop is... uh... less successful.

Anyway! Skully, Scary and Ruby go out for a night on the town, leaving the kids with a babysitter. Max and Harry end up going to the same bar.

... I love Count Max's fangirls.

Ruby is less than impressed by today's modern day vampire. Old fashioned vampires like Max have manners!

Max is getting pretty fed up with the fangirls, not to mention Harry. If Max can find one woman in the crowd that he finds attractive, Harry will stop pestering him... and then he sees Ruby across the room.

I love this page. Check out the way Orson hangs over his mother's shoulder!

Poor Orson.

And just for the finale...!

Cute, yet somehow still creepy. Reminds me of some stylized Halloween cards with wacky colors.

Scary Godmother is awesome, and a terrific choice for a first post, so welcome!

I meant to dig out the Mainframe-produced (They did ReBoot and Beast Wars to name but two) DVD specials that they did a few years ago to rewatch them this Halloween, but forgot, oh well, Scary Godmother is fun any time of the year.

Two! The Scary Godmother Halloween Spooktacular, and then a year later Scary Godmother 2: The Revenge of Jimmy. They air on TV at Halloween every year up here.

I'm embarassed to admit: Until the special came out and I actually saw and HEARD Mr Pettibone? I never realized he was the sassy gay friend. I just, you know, figured he liked clothes and makeovers because he lived in a closet. And, er, that he was in a closet because he was a skeleton, not... well. Yeah. So, all these years on scans daily, and it turns out I have absolutely NO comic book gaydar. I am ashamed.

To be fair, with Scott McNeil camping it up like CRAAAA-ZEEE, "in the closet" becomes the LAST thing Scully is. :)

Yup, and they're good fun too. You can see a sample here Scary herself doesn't show up until late in the clip, but it's a great entrance.

I love the Charles Addams feel this whole thing has, and it manages to be more or less contemporary without being overbearing. Me like!

I'm more familiar with this from the TV specials that I've seen, but is the skeleton supposed to be gay? He's really into makeovers, seemed a bit effeminate on the show, and I can't help but feel that him living in a closet is meant to be ironic or something.

They never outright said in the special I saw, but he is most definitely high camp-- and after all, he IS out of the closet now...

Interesting - I always wondered whether 'Scary Godmother' was worth looking at. I like the way Max's robes are drawn as he moves - they kind of pool around his feet like liquid. Very nice effect.

Ruby's huge smile in the panel where she well and truly gets drunk is kind of adorable. I love Jill Thompson's stuff.

D'aawww, cute. :3

(Also: I always tell the n00bs on Gaia's Supernatural forum that real werewolves wouldn't waste their time fucking around on the electric interwebs. Guess I was wrong... XD)
