Oh my god. This was beautiful. And sadly, it's things like this is why he should stay dead. Nothing sucks more from an emotional story like this then a resurrection later.
I don't even like Spiderman. I REALLY don't like U!Spiderman. But goddamnit, "Do you need a hug right now?" was like a kick in the gut. Even scrolling back up to make sure I quoted it right just HURT.
I think the trouble with so many "Death Issues" is that it limits the grieving to the superheroes who knew them. This was affecting, I think, because it's the ordinary people he spent his time saving who come to honor him in death. No one showing up in mask and costume to take away from his funeral. Instead, we get J. Jonah Jameson quietly breaking down and an (almost) almost empty classroom. That hits hard.
I maintain that this was a death done well. Should it have happened? No. Did the circumstances leading up to it kind of suck? Yes. But the way Peter Parker died, and the way this is being handled, is extremely honest to the character. I hope he doesn't come back and invalidate this.
I remember it was during the mid 90s that I got a chance to read the storyline known as "Web of Death", whose main plot would be Peter dying of a mysterious virus as well as receiving the help of Doctor Octopus. I cried rivers of tears because I really thought Spidey would die. I would be consumed by happiness when I got to see that Spidey had been cured and that he would renounce the darker methods he had been using during those days. It was a victory (somehow) for optimism and I thought Marvel wouldn't try to "murder" their main franchise again.
Then One More Day came.
I had lost any hopes for the Nu-Spidey and decided to check some of the Non-Post-OMD Spidey comic books as well as other books that weren't on the main Marvel Universe. I would not lie to you, comrades, I was shocked when I got the chance to read the Death of Ultimate Spidey yet I felt it was done in a great manner because he died fighting for the people he loved even when the odds were against him. Spidey never giving up nor taking any easy routes has always been one of mine favorite features of our friendly neighbor, no matter the universe he lives on.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I am going to meditate on a corner.
He really depressing thing is that it's highly likely that SHIELD or someone will secretly confiscate Peter's body so theyh can study his altered genetics.
I mean, the CIA started up the first viable cloning facility using just a small amount of his blood, with them even having Dr Octopus released from prison to work on it as he was the lead scientist behind the experiment that lead to Peter getting powers.
Form there they were able to discover they could manipulate his DNA in various interesting ways, from creating a clone with a more spider-like appearance, to female ones, to ones that were basically human, just aged faster.
Considering the emergance of Venom created a virtual arms race between SHIELD, Latveria and various other countries and agencies, I highly doubt that they'll just leave Peter's corpse be. They'd just see it as being too valuable.
For example, that's why the Doctor has standing orders in place for people to burn his body in the even of his death, to prevent the knowledge they could decypher from his alien body falling into the wrong hands.
Hell, this even happened to Superman when he died. People dug into his memorial and stole his body so they could study it. Or just stare at it floating in a tube in the case of Luthor in the animated movie.
It does matter if he died saving the world. It doesn't matter that people loved him. It doesn't matter that all he wanted was to help people without getting anything in return.
Peter is now... an unusual specimen of frog on a dissection plate, and someone, possibly even Nick Fury, is going to be stood in the background overseeing the guys with the scapels.
Excuse me while I drown in a sea of tears. This scene is such a beautiful moment, how Aunt May's eyes tear up and she just wordlessly hugs the kid. I love it when emotions can be conveyed so...directly.
The best part about this to me is, despite the absolute heartbreak of losing a boy you loved like your very own son, May can now see just how much of a wonderful, strong, courageous and amazing child she raised. The idea that the boy you raised as your own had the ability, courage and conviction to change so many lives and help so many people is probably the most wonderful condolence she could ever get
.... oh god this was not the right thing to see right after just watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows part 2.... don't mind me... i;ll be over here... downing in my own salty tears...
