It was very sad to go back and find all the Unfortunate Implications in those books. They were some delicious goddamn brain candy. Feudalism in space with dragons!

Although tbh having read My Friend Flicka (and the sequels Thunderhead and Green Grass of Wyoming) the plots aren't really similar. I guess they do tie into the popularity of companion animals - I've read some interesting theories as to why horses are so very popular with little girls.
