On a similar note, apparently Starfire's bikini was supposed to be transparent.

That's for a future Cringeworthy Comicbook Moments thing, I guess.

Working on a Casstoon, should be up tomorrow or Wednesday.

That particular DC comic book will be lucky if it gets one tenth of that number of readers.

Three supporting characters, who have been twisted out of recognition and seem to have had the things people liked best about them taken away. Yeah, seems like a genius idea.

I don't believe I'm actually defending this... well, actually I'm not, just going on a tangent, but it still feels kind of icky... but cartoons just will get a wider audience. Television is easy. It's just a click away. Comics as a hobby requires lots more investment, so it won't get the numbers except on certain rare exceptions.

Yes yes, but the point is if you go out of your way to alienate any potential cross-over audience . . . .

If you're trying to up the sales on the comics, wouldn't you want to make them more like the popular TV series, not completely different?

Bleeding Cool cited a Brazilian comic that regularly sells 400k copies an issue, and has sold half a million. Yeah, it's not two million, but it seems like comics can sell a hell of a lot more than what they're doing. But the mainstream US comics don't seem to be trying to expand their appeal to the potentially interested audience.

I mean - a lot of women watched Teen Titans and read Scott Pilgrim or manga. So as they like the characters and like sequential art, they're a great potential audience for a Teen Titans comic, yes? But... no.

I think Shortpacked pretty much nails it on the head. DC is shooting itself in the foot - AND going against their previous stated aims when DC Entertainment was formed with Diane Nelson and Geoff Johns, which was to make the DC characters consistent across the media spectrum (which was also one of the reasons Didio gave for bringing back Barbara as Batgirl -because she was was the one people would recognize from the cartoons as such). The reality is DC is not really interested in new readers or even younger readers (if that was the case the Marvel Family should have been given a book right out of the gate) but only with the same demographic they used to be getting: males 18-34. You can't run a business successfully with that kind of premise.

Yeah, a few weeks back there was a similar observation on the Deconstructing Comics podcast. The basic idea was they had a readership, and as time went by the readership went away. Either by aging or finding alternatives, which are getting easier and easier to track down. Now they're in a panic, and want that market back again, without realizing that taking a risk and putting effort into opening new markets and changing public attitudes about their product would be a much more profitable and sustainable route.

But basically it's a bunch of guys who don't understand their market in a state of panic.

You know what gets me about all this Starfire controversy? The fact that people are ignoring the bit of the book that shows her written well.

When Jason and Roy are escaping from that prison in the jeep, Starfire flies down to them and says "Is there anything else I can do, Jason?" and Jason asks her if she'll take care of the other soldiers and tanks for them, she says "Certainly. I'll see you soon?" and Jason tells her that he can't wait.

Then we turn the page and see her in a bikini, telling us that she can't tell Jason and Roy apart. People are making so much of a fuss about Starfire's characterisation on the beach and her supposedly forgetting her time with the Teen Titans. That doesn't bother me, it's a reboot, as far as I'm concerned, we know nothing about Starfire's past and things that have changed. The thing that bothers me is that she goes from being genuinely excited about seeing Jason again, to not knowing who Jason is in the space of a page.
I wonder if this is Lobdell acting out because he didn't want Starfire in this book.

I don't want to defend that comic either, but even if they had made the character exactly like the cartoon character, does anyone honestly think that would have produced a significant bump in sales? I mean, while the cartoon was on, DC put out a TEEN TITANS GO tie-in comic month in and month out. Does anyone want to check up how much that sold?

The Shortpacked strip is right about how this comic will be lucky to crack 100,000 in sales, but come on, barring an all-star creative team, that would have been the case no matter what.

It's not about making Starfire more into her cartoon self. It's more about how DC took a powerful, but friendly female character who was open with her emotions (which can describe both comics and toon versions of Kory easily) and turned her into an emotionless, living sex doll with a goldfish memory.

And also how DC is alienating their female readers and could easily get these much sought-after "new readers" by simply not producing crappy comics.

I think that would make the situation between the three of them skeevy(ier) though.

If Roy and Jason are aware that Kory is acting really out of character compared to how she usually is, and is displaying evidence of amnesia because of some kind of physical and/or emotional trauma or some evil meddling, they should probably be showing restraint when she starts propositioning them for cheap sex for no apparent reason.

I needed this.

And even though that transparent bikini really would have drawn my scorn and resent, I am glad he posted it on his deviantart and that it sparked some very amusing fanart in turn.

Honestly, I think the issue needs to start and end with a few pages of Jason and Roy being nude (or mostly nude, as in tiny stuff just barely covering them). I don't really care if it's for no reason or not. It'd be a great way to start redeeming for what happened to Kory. The comic is all about redemption after all, right?

I'm apparently pretty alone in this, but I like Red Hood and the Outlaws, and I don't think Starfire's characterization is a crime against humanity.

... BUT I'm basically the target audience for this reboot - I'm sort of familiar with canon for some characters. I wanted to read comics in the past, but was intimidated by the amount of backstory I'd missed. I watched maybe 10 episodes of the Teen Titans TV series ever, and the only character in Red Hood that I'm familiar with at all is Jason.

I liked the book, but I never knew or cared about the old version of Starfire. I'm perfectly content to start anew.

DC: All about making their comic characters match the most recognizable versions out there in the wider entertainment world... so long as that involves making them sexier.

"Everyone knows Batgirl is Barbara Gordon, and sitting at a computer in a wheelchair isn't sexy, so... she's Batgirl! Young and sexy!"

"Amanda Waller recently appeared in a movie, young and sexy, so young and sexy it is!"

"Starfire was watched by millions in the Teen Titans cartoon... but she's not very sexy, is she? Practically no breasts at all. No, no. We don't change her at all." "Hey, wait a second, I have an idea here... it's a little outside the box... do you think we can make her even sexier in the reboot?" "I like the way you think."
