Since she's returned to comics after a lengthy absence (last seen being drugged by Tim Drake after eating some chocolates he'd doped, I think it was) I thought that it'd be fun to post some bits of Lady Shiva injuring people out of context.

If only because she's more interesting than Deathstroke, despite filling the same niche as him (only she got where she as by hard graft, while he cheats by having explicit superpowers) while having an actual code of conduct instead of just pretending to have one these days.

So here we go!

Lady Shiva kicking Tim...

...kicking Batman...

...armlocking Dick (while Tim watches)...

...kneeing some ramdom guy in the groin...

...showing Catwoman why fighting her something of a onesided deal (until Talia hits her from behind with a chair, but Loeb never seemed to respect Shiva that much anyway)...

...showing amusement at Huntress' fighting style, or maybe her weird bra...

...Shiva versus Croc...

...And on the more creepy side, here's the time that Shiva propositioned Tim way back when he became Robin for the first time...

Wasn't Shiva's last appearance actually in the Brightest Day Birds of Prey relaunch?

I mean, granted, I thought her appearance there was as big a load of shit as her being drugged by chocolate - because she's a woman and women love chocolates, amirite? - but still. Not much of her treatment outside of O'Neill impresses me, though, especially not Loeb or Simone.

Had to offset the indignity of being jumped by what appeared to be a kickboxing Cockney shoeshine boy who beat up him and Cass OFFPANEL.

...Underdog was affecting a Cockney accent? Because that's the only way I can see that working.

My opinions of Shiva were always more than a little coloured by Chuck Dixon and his obsession with martial arts measuring themselves against each other (If your mind went anywhere other than what I intended by that, then enjoy). He seemed completely taken with every major martial artist in the world being totally focussed on making it into the top 10 martial artists league (or variant thereof). So Shiva would wander the world challenging people to show that she was better than they were, when frankly, by the time you get to the level of people like Shiva, Bruce, Dick, Tim, Richard (Dragon), Cass and Connor Hawke you're looking at such infinitesimal differences that it ceases to have that much meaning in 99.9% of cases.

And I always held that the Batclan would be considered to be truly awful martial artists by the Masters of those skills, because they are not ultimately interested in the ultimate expression of that form, they are interested in taking down as many bad guys as their mission entails as quickly as possible.

Devin Grayson, to her credit, had one scene where I think it's Black Mask is watching Nightwing stopping a gang and counts him using five different martial arts styles in that single melee. It doesn't matter to them whether it's karate, judo, capoeira, or krav maga, as long as it WORKS!

That sounds like the sort of thing that comes of gaming culture combined with the desire for a precise statistical measure of whose is bigger; that's the same line of thought that begat midichlorians.

hmmm, as far as sleeping with other men, i saw it as more of her self confidence in her sexuality. i think the implied low self image had more to do with her skills as a fighter and how in perfecting herself as a weapon she has lost touch with being human.

that said, her "Death" did give us one of the best lines in BoP (paraphrasing)

Shiva: "My daughter hung me on a metal hook and left me for dead."

BoP:.....

Shiva: it was the proudest moment of my life.

Lady Shiva had low self image issues? Really? I can think of few characters that would seem LESS appropriate for.

What I always loved the most was her disdain towards Vic, and how Izzy O'Toole treated her back with the same disdain.

I should post some of it after the Non Big Two Week.

All this talk makes me wonder if that's the true purpose to see Dick in Nightwing. Not to test his fighting prowess but.. his more famous.. I've been on this site too long.

I'm not crazy about Lady Shiva, but I loved her role in Knightfall, re-training Bruce after his spine was healed. Very dangerous, callous woman.

But am I the only one who looks at this art and despairs at its deterioration? The closer to our times, the poorer it is. Compare the colors of her armlocking Nightwing and the Croc panel, or the anatomy in her kicking Batman with the porny art of, I presume, Jim Lee - just no comparison.

I liked the Birds of Prey arc where Black Canary was following in her footsteps. Got to say, though, comic book artists are for shit when it comes to depicting martial arts in any way approaching realistic.

I love the line from her first Birds of Prey story: "She's killed more people than we've had runs in our pantyhose." And they all ran away from her.

Oh man, that "...And on the more creepy side, here's the time that Shiva propositioned Tim way back when he became Robin for the first time..."-scene.... still hanging around in my mind.
I'm just glad no one ever decided to follow-up on that... °___°
