At one point in 1999, Superman was on some sort of overprotective binge (I can't recall exactly why, some crisis or other he was guilt tripping over), and cameo-ing in every DC title they could cram him into...

This landed him smack bang in the middle of issue 2 of the new "Titans" comic, and as they were hardly up and running themselves, it was not the most comfortable meeting.

Something tells me that as this was an editorially mandated crossover and Devin Grayson making the best of it.

So, just after trashing a new, and rather dull, incarnation of the HIVE, the Titans are congratulating each other on a job well done when Superman arrives out of the blue. It's an interesting take, some of the Titans have known him for ages, others have never met him before, most are in awe. It's akin to the President/Queen dropping in unannounced.

No one is quite sure how to react, but this next page gives a pretty excruciating summation of the situation...

You know he means well, and some of the beats are sincere (his commiserating with Kory) but he comes across as so so damn patronising..

They head back to the HIVE base whose position they have triangulated, with Mother-Hen Superman coming with them to keep them safe, no on is really happy, but their lovable leader decides to take matters in hand...

There are very few who could say that to Superman

And in this next page, I don't think Donna's logic really works there (as Mr and Mrs Grayson would attest if they weren't, y'know, dead from a fall. But keep track of what the cute arobat is saying here...

Now that's respect.

Yea, Superman was a bit heavy there, but he comes around.

I would like it if this run were collected.

I love the smile on Dick's face when he's talking about the team and the smile on Clark's at the end. It'll always be my headcanon that Dick has been a leader of the Titans since he was a kid.

Aww, love Clark's concern for Dick falling. :)

Would YOU want to be the one to have to explain to Bruce that Dick had gone squish because you'd let him fall? They'd be picking Kryptonite out of every orifice Clark has, and a few new ones Bruce would have ripped him.

Ha, very true! But luckily Bruce knows that Clark wouldn't let Dick come to any harm, especially when he's in uber-protective mode. :)

Yeah, its really hard for me to be ok with that aspect of his character having been erased. The Marv Wolfman era Titans is what made me fall in love with comics in the first place. It really sucks that it didn't make it into the DCnU

I still don't know why it didn't make it in. I mean that's one of the most seminal runs of all the DCU, it would be like overwriting Alan Moore's Swamp Thing. Plus Deathstroke only works as a "badass" if you know about his start in the Titans.

actually why not just call the new team Young Justice and while yes it would live under the Shadow of PAD's run it would at least be able to keep both teams plus it ties into the TV show.

Don't worry, in five years they'll reboot again. :)

I hold to the idea that somewhere, there's an Earth where the re-boot never happened, and Our Heroes go about their business with their histories intact. *nods*

New Krypton, New Tamaran, New Earth. Remind me not to visit any planets with "New" in the name, that never seems to end well.

This looks like a fun run on the Titans. I'm assuming it was never collected into a trade? It'd be nice to see more stuff from it. (I have the Titans/JLA: Techinus Imperitive, which I think has this team, but that's it.)

I love Legion Recruitment drives. They go from "Let's have you do a task that is nearly impossible" to "as long as you aren't howlingly incompetent, you are totally in," depending on the run/universe/writer.
