After both the Sandman and Dian get over the shock of surprising each other, Dian tries to raise the alarm. The Sandman shoves her aside though, and jumps out the window, escaping via the line he'd used to get into police headquarters in the first place.

After collecting herself, Dian goes to tell the police station full of cops and reporters that a masked man, who might be the kidnapper who took her friend, seemed to be listening in on their conversations about the case...
Dian checks the body of the murdered woman, who appears to have been tortured to death. It isn't her friend Catherine van der Meer. The actual Catherine is being kept in a basement somewhere handcuffed to a wall. It seems that the Tarantula wants her to give up some information that her boyfriend, a secretive business sort, might have told her. She protests that she doesn't know anything, so the Tarantula drops the severed hand of the previous woman on the floor in from of Catherine as a means of jogging her memory. Doesn't work, just freaks her out more.
The Tarantula then talks to his mother, and says that it's evident that Catherine doesn't know anything, and that they should get rid of her as soon as possible. His mother says that she must know something, as she knows how his father opens up about secretive information after sex, all it should take is just the right amount of pressure and she should spill the beans...
Dian is just about to head home from the police station, when a surprise guest is there to give them a lift home. It's Wesley, who his friend the Judge fills him in casually on more of the investigation, and after they drop him off at his house, Dian's surprised to find that Wesley is actually crying after hearing the gruesome details of what happened to the woman. He apologises, saying that big boys aren't supposed to cry at such things, but this is met with awkward silence.
Meanwhile, at stately Goldman Manor (home of the former bootlegger and associate of Wesley's dad mention in the last issue) Goldman's daughter Celia sees off her boyfriend...

Later, Dian gets a letter from Wesley apologising further about his behaviour in the ca the other night.

Elsewhere, Lieutenant Burke (the investigating officer in most of the SMT stories) goes to the home of the cabbie that drove Catherine home that night to see if he knows anything about her disappearance. While he's there, he notices a masked man climbing up the fire escape...

The next day, Burke isn't happy about knocked out by some masked vigilante and goes to complain to his superior.

The kidnapped Catherine, however, has finally had enough. She tells the Tarantula to just kill her already, but instead the Tarantula has other plans. He's going to torture a third kidnapped woman to death in front of her instead...
