So Joker tricked Superman into killing his wife and unborn child and setting off an atomic bomb that destroyed Metropolis. Superman decides to pay Mister J a visit and Green Lantern decides to stop him; in turn, Supes takes away Lantern's ring.
But he's crossing THE LINE! Even when supervillains murder entire cities, you can't kill them! You need to put them into easily escapable prisons! So what if they're just gonna get out and kill thousands/millions more people? You can't kill them! Otherwise you'd be crossing THE LINE!
Normally I'd be all blah blah whatever about this, but Death of a Family Joker!God has been grinding on my nerves recently, so instead this gives me a big happy.
To be fair, Lex DID kill Wally. Superman probably just knew what DC had planned for him & decided that there needs to be at least one universe where Wally is the Flash.
There are worse ways to kill a clown. Also? The Joker committed a crime against HUMANITY. There is a point where superheroes should kill villains without batting an eye.
While I'm really -really- happy to see Joker getting something like this finally....
It's not going to kill him. There's that Joker editorial mandate where he just won't die.
And besides, as this is a tie-in to the upcoming game, unless they are doing 'the whole story mode' and not just a backstory of what -led- into the game, Joker won't die. He's a playable character.
Which is good. I'll get to take all my 'Death of the Family' frustrations out on him.
Maybe Joker will be an unlockable character for whatever free mode the game has, but isn't playable in the story mode due to being dead. They do that sometimes.
Okay, I have to admit, that was actually pretty funny.
Also sometimes I feel like this whole Batman-Joker thing is subliminal propaganda by the comic book companies to increase support for the death penalty. How come no one ever wants to see a comic where the Joker's rehabilitated and becomes a functioning member of society? They're both equally (im)possible.
I think people have tried to "fix" Joker but it never works. I think the closest thing was he had some sort of chip in his brain that kept him docile but Carnage (it was a Spider-Man crossover) stuck a tendril up Joker's nose to deactivate it and return him to normal.
There was also the time that his mind 'snapped' back to sanity when he thought he had killed Batman but he reverted once he found out Batman was still alive.
I kinda like that the whole thing is very swift, Clark just enters the room and kills Joker, done. No grandstanding as the others try to talk him down or any of that crap. And it's immensely satisfying to see Joker actually die, in light of the boring God Mode Joker we've had for so long now. Wondering how they're going to have Joker around for the videogame though, my first guess is that he'll be cloned back to life or something.
my first guess is that he'll be cloned back to life or something.
I really, really hate that trope.
People can't be cloned back to life, because a clone is not the same person as the original. It's like saying that if a person who died had a twin sibling, that person didn't really die because there is a living person with identical DNA.
Yet that trope is incredibly common. One of the few plots in Futurama that weren't played for laughs was about Fry's old dog, and Fry had to decide whether to bring him back to life or not. But cloning the dog wouldn't have brought him back to life, it would have only created a twin brother!
... I am sure Joker is going to die from that like how Steel died from getting his liver pierced by his hammer-handle by Lex... or whend Bruce was nailed in the liver too with a wooden staff...
Nope, I thought of that myself. Better he should go down the dark path then let Clark do it. I'd expect Bruce to shoulder that burden and end Joker once and for all.
Personally I'm hoping that it's just a clone or something, it'd feel like an annoying cheat to find that he'd somehow cheated Superman out of his revenge.
Really Bats? You REALLY didn't see this coming? You've nearly killed the Joker for less, and you've seen Superman seriously consider killing Luthor, and you didn't use your detective skills to deduce that maybe Superman is finally going to CROSS THE LINE OMG?
Honestly this scene would have been so much better if Batman tried to shield the Joker or whip out some kryptonite, only for Superman to beat his ass down and then go for the Joker. That would actually seem villainous, instead of doing everyone a favor.
(Or even better, for Bats to actually stand aside and let it happen, which would fuel a lot of guilt later on when he sees the world he helped create.)
Well, at least the Joker died as he lived in this series: making Batman look like a moron. Points for consistency?
I'm just wondering how the Leaguers have time to act out this whole drama when there's a nuclear disaster on the Eastern Seaboard to deal with. Aren't there, like, millions of victims to help, millions of corpses to retrieve and identify, fallout to clean up, devastated areas to rebuild? Is stopping Superman from Crossing The Line!! more important than that?
Last issue: A Kingdom Come reference. This issue: another Kingdom Come reference with a Killing Joke reference mixed in. Who the heck wrote this, Paul Jenkins?
I know I'm supposed to be shocked at this, but, truth-be-told, I think that if the Joker did this to any superhero (especially Batman) I'm pretty sure that their reaction would be the same. Plus, the difference between Batman and Superman in this situation was that Batman actually had time to grieve, and only lost his parents; and not his whole f*cking city including the love of his life and their child!
So does Bats feel guilty about failing to stop Supes from CROSSING THE LINE OMG, or about not crossing it himself to prevent Joker from doing this or any of his other crimes?
Guys guys guys, you've got it all wrong. Joker won't be cloned.
Batman will save him somehow.
I wish I was joking (no pun intended) but I totally bet that's what will happen.
That, or the whole "story mode" of the game will involve Batman going back in time (probably with a crew of "stayed true" heroes) to prevent the whole mess from happening in the first place, with Superdicktator and his crew following him to try to stop him or something.
Personally I'm just annoyed (though certainly not surprised) that Batman's clearly the "hero" of the game. It would've been far more interesting to see, say, Wonder Woman, Nightwing, or even Captain Marvel in that role (or all three) playing against Superman AND Batman in full on "Justice Lord" mode.
Uhh.. is it wrong for me to find supe's face in the last panel kinda hilarious? I guess I just can't find too much drama in "the LINE being crossed" in these sorts of circumstances.
(Also i'm gonna call it rite now that Batman kills Superman in the last issue)
