Trigger warning: incest, sexism and racism!
Detective Burke arrives at the Evergood Dairy, it's been shut down for some years which made one of its vans being seen in the area of Catherine van der Meer's kidnapping kind than a little suspicious. He heads up to the office, only to find the Sandman is already there leafing through the paperwork. Burke tries to arrest him, only to get another face full of gas as the masked man makes another run for it, though the policeman still manages to pistolwhip him some.
Dodds arrives home, only to find an unexpected visitor.
Meanwhile, in the Tarantula's basement the woman kidnapped at the end of the last issue has been tortured to death in front of Catherine to try and get her to talk... only it's becoming increasinly evident to the Tarantula at least that Catherine really doesn't know any of the information that they thought that she does. The Tarantula wants to stop, but his mother tells him that he can't until they SOMEHOW find out what they want to know.
Elsewhere, Albert Goldman (ex-bootlegger from the previous issues) has completed another business deal, where he's signing over numerous businesses over to his daughter. Afterwards he calls his butler to try and pick up Catherine van der Meer, only to remember suddenly that she's been the victim of a notorious kidnapping. He tells his butler to just pick up a prostitute as an alternative from somewhere or he'll sack him...
Dinah, meanwhile, gets a job at her dad's office to assist in her law degree... but mostly so she can get information to help solve her friend's kidnapping. The fact that he dad assumes that she'll be there JUST to answer the phones doesn't exactly improve her mood.
Burke meets up with his commanding officer to go over what he found at the Evergood Dairy, as well as demonstrate how he's... complicated. A dick, but complicated.
The Sandman tracks down a former lawyer whose client was the owner of the Evergood Dairy, to try and find out who the current owner is. As the name of the property is actually an alias, he wants to know who actually owns the place, but the guy just starts lying on autopilot so Sandman gasses him... much to the frustration of Burke, who arrives some few minutes after he leaves. As he calls in what he discovered on the ex-lawyer's phone, it finds out that the most recent kidnapping victim's body has been found dumped in an alley somewhere.
To try and figure out how to find out the real owner's name, Wesley visits his judge friend.
And Dian has a run in with her dad, the DA.
Wesley's break-in to try and get some leads from the Federal Building are unsuccessful, as a night watchman comes along before he could find what he needs. Conveniently though, Dian comes around to ask Wesley about Albert Goldman, saying that in her dad's safe there were papers regarding an investigation into the man, regarding his using various properties around New York to launder his bootlegging money through. But since the repeal of the 14th Amendment, the case had become something of a non-priority, and the case was put on stand-by.
And while Wes and Dian are slowly getting to the conclusion of their investigations, Burke is interviewing the ex-lawyer to see who the real owner of Evergood Dairy is using the finest techniques of the 1938 NYPD. Namely, he beats the man until he tells him what he wants to know. And it seems that Albert Goldman is the actual owner of the building, albeit through a friend whose name is on the actual paperwork.
Meanwhile, at the Goldman residence, ...stuff happens.
And if you've worked out who the Tarantula and his mother are, you can pretty much guess what happens next. That is, Goldman's daughter kidnapped by the Tarantula.
