Trigger warning for discussed child abuse

Wesley and Dian get the news that Albert Goldman's daughter has been kidnapped, and Wes rushes over there in Sandman mode to spy on the police's investigation. Albert is distraught, but his wife and son... seem suspiciously blaise about the situation.

Burke and another policeman go to interview another of Goldman's associates who happen to be connected with the Evergood Dairy, only for the Sandman to overhear where they're going and sabotage their car so he could get there first.

Once he's there, the Sandman promptly gasses the accountant, and learns (the gas acts as a truth serum in addition to a narcotic) that Goldman's son Roger is the actual owner, his father just giving him the dairy as his inheritance as punishment for his having lost a fortune in gambling debts...

Shortly afterwards, the police are giving DA Belmont an update on the case as Dian listens just outside the door. He fills them in on the case that he was building against Goldman, in addition to his money laundering schemes and ties to the Mafia. The cops decide that, what with the connections between Goldman and at least two of the Tarantula's victims, his affiliation with violent criminals and his secret ownership of the Evergood Dairy, that Albert Goldman must be the Tarantula, or at least know who he might be.

As they head off to arrest him, the Sandman appears in front of Belmont, having snuck in through a window while his back was turned. He tells Belmont not to worry, and that he's there with information. He relays how Roger is the actual owner of Evergood and how he's had a history of violent outbursts, and that in the very least HE should be kept for questioning. And the police should get him soon, as their closing in may cause him to attempt to flee.

Belmont seems a touch skeptical about all of this, and asks the Sandman what his interest in all of this is.

As the police go to Albert Goldman's house and find that both his son and wife have fled, Dian arrives at the policestation and (after much browbeating) manages to convince him that she can find where Roger and his mother are keeping their victims. They rush to the Federal Building to look for buildings owned by the Goldmans that tie up with a theory Dian has...

Meanwhile, in the Tarantula's dungeon, Miriam Goldman is whipping her daughter for "stealing" her husband. Celia says that it wasn't the first time either... which doesn't help her situation in her mother's eyes. Now that they seem to finally have the person who ACTUALLY has the information that they were looking for, Miriam and Roger decide to finally just murder Catherine van der Meer after having kept her hanging from the ceiling by her wrists for about a week.

But before Miriam can hack Catherine to pieces with an axe, the Sandman appears and, after a struggle (cause partially by the axe wielding Miriam being filled with so much booze that the gas wasn't as effective against her) manages to save Catherine and Celia (yay!).

Shortly afterwards, Dian, Burke and the police arrive.

The next day, they go over the case to explain just what the heck was going on with the Goldmans for them to want to do this.

And thus ends the first storyline of SMT, which I personally hold with being one of the better DCU-tied Vertigo series (events in the comic directly tie together with ones in James Robinson's Starman and vice versa). If you can track it down I recommend it, though the content can be harsh it does have one of the more awesome non-superpowered female characters in the DCU, the underrated Dian Belmont.
