For those who follow such things, "Rule 63" states that "For any given male character, there is a female version of that character" and vice versa...


and Joe Phillips clearly believes that the vice should be just as sexy as the versa....

I believe the appropriate term is 'Yowsa!'

...I lean pretty heavy towards the heterosexual side of things, but even I'll admit that the first four are great. Cloak and Dagger are my favourite comics duo, but I've always had trouble with her costume. Reverse male objectification is a good way of making up for it!

The Emma Frost and (for some weird reason) Starfire costume are pretty great. The last two though are a bit awkward. Could be due to the masks or another bit.

The Black Cat one is a little odd, I think it just makes me think it looks chilly to wear... which it doubtless would be, but in a way that the Disco!Wing collar never gave the same impression.

I don't normally like blonds but the Emma Frost one is very sexy. Clearly, always the exception that proves the rule.
Also - they have different faces! And body types! Get the artist on a major comic now!

The nice thing is that the Dagger and the Donna Troy costumes could actually work as male character costumes :)) The rest, though, they pretty much drive the nail in on the objectification front.

You say Wonder Boy...I say Wonder Bulge.

The Batlad outfit just doesn't work... the mask feels totally off and the whole feel is just... not quite there as a costume.

The plunging neckline on Black Tomcat is, again, a dissonant element in an otherwise sleek outfit. The mask, again, doesn't really seem to fit. While the outfit and its sensibilities work for Felicia Hardy, on um.. Phillipe? Hardy, there's something off. He needs to consult with Kraven.

Wonder Bulge's outfit is nigh perfect. Very male gymnast in feel.

StarfireLad's outfit is again damned near perfect... kind of has this badass alien wrestler feel, like he could pin you and... anyway.........

I like Emmett Frost, there. Except...the way the straps and cape work, it looks like it would slip around a lot and be pretty uncomfortable. Sticky tape, anyone? But very Chippendales, which is appropriate given Emma's original fashion sense.

And the Dagger outfit is... very nice. Though he looks ready to go visit Tarot, Witch of the Black Rose.

I wholly approve of objectifying the men by showcasing them in the costumes of well-known female characters, as it further demonstrates just how odd some female costumes can be, but this also proves that, due to fundamental differences between male and female physiques, some details may need alterations just so they become fully functional uniforms.

I think if you're defining superhero costumes by "functionality", most of them fail before you've even finished putting them on. :)

I just realized that a dagger is long, hard, and used for piercing, while a cloak has folds and envelops you (and has a little hood that conceals the head), so rule-63ing Cloak and Dagger actually makes more sense.

According to the villain Mr Jip (who claimed responsibility for their powers at one time), each was supposed to have the others power, but the drugs screwed things up so though Tandy was meant to be Cloak and Tyrone was supposed to be Dagger, that ain't what happened.

While this sort of thing is, at best, a malignant tumor on the industry, that Troy concept is actually semi-solid and the Harvey take is just a stone's throw away from what Sabretooth used to wear so...

First one's alright, I guess.

Second one, you could shave his head, paint him green, give him red eyes and change the costume blue and you have Martian Manhunter.

Third one reminds me of the leather clad space Swedes from "Dude, Where's My Car?"

The fourth one (Wonder Boy?) is perhaps the only one I can actually see a guy wearing.

Fifth one looks like someone trying to cosplay as BDSM Sabretooth.

The Sixth one would be okay but the open cowl to let the hair flow would only work if he had much much longer hair. Or better yet, seal the whole cowl up entirely and just leave the mouth open.

From my observation these particular outfits seem designed to accentuate feminine body features. When a guy wears it, it seems very homo-erotic. And if that's the look your going for, that's great. But let me put it to you this way, I personally don't think any man could wear Black Cat's costume any better than a woman.

Doesn't that slightly short circuit your point? If it's feminine it's not likely to be homoerotic to a gay man, since a gay bloke isn't (particularly) going to find something which accentuates female bits erotic (There's an intersection set of course, and all sorts of shades of gay, but...)

(Though I never thought I'd quote Will & Grace, there's a scene where Will is describing a weird sex dream he'd had the night before..

"I feel like I'm having sex with a woman, and, uh, as a gay man, let's just say there are things there that I wish weren't there, um, and, one thing that isn't there that I really kind of miss.")

Oh, and I thought Felix up above looks pretty good, something of a speed skater thing going on there
