Artist Scott Clark has passed away at 43.

Frank Tieri noted that Clark had been sick while they worked on Grifter and had no idea it was that bad.

Always sad to lose a talent so young.

For the works he's worked on, this lists many of them

I feel bad because I only really know his work through the recent controversy with Liefeld calling him a bad artist (when Clark was a blatantly better one even based on covers alone), but it always stings when stuff like this happens. And he was pretty young, all things considered, too...

Whilst I'm sure he would rather be remembered for his own actual, quality work, I would sincerely hope that he'd take being slammed as a bad artist by Rob Liefeld as something A) Hilariously ironic and/or B) Akin to a compliment.

I do remember a really rather large number of people coming to his defense - as they did with a number of others Liefeld tried to slam - over the matter. But.. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, the covers in question at the time were these, from what I recall;

So.. Yeah. One actually *looks* like a fairly exciting, if standard, superhero cover with two characters fighting - with, IMO, pretty decent art. The other looks like Midnighter is actually trying to photobomb Grifter's snapshot in a 'supppp brooooo' kind of way.

Mostly I'm seeing a lot of homoerotic subtext in Liefeld's cover. But then Liefeld's body of work is littered with these kind of unintentional moments.

Having seen enough of his work over the years? I know what you mean. It's kind-of odd, given Liefeld is perhaps the artist who - by his personality - I'd least associate with that kind of thing.

Maybe I need to go hunt up some scans for a "Rob Liefeld: America's Favorite Yaoi Artist" post :)

What have we done to deserve THAT? Have we been bad?

Semantics aside, I'm thinking that many years ago a young Rob ran across some of the work of Tom of Finland and thought those biker guys looked bad ass! and promtly went off to draw something similar. All the time completely unaware of the homosexual overtones.

Somehow, Rob has preserved that oblivousness through his entire career as a comic artist.

As a human being, I have never found his work erotic. Those wonky-proportioned doll-beings did NOT come from a planet with earth's gravity. *shudder*.

Rob "Captain Manboobs America" Liefeld calling someone else a bad artist always strikes me as akin to, say, Uwe Boll casting aspersions on JJ Abrams.

Well, yeah. Spot on. I mean, even looking at the linked covers I put in a later reply here, I'd rather read a book with Clark's art than Liefeld's, y'know?

Liefeld should follow his own example WRT Prophet and Glory and outsource his social media to someone who can manage it better.

Prrrrretty much. It's why it's genuinely bizarre he's folding the stuff back in and taking Bloodstrike or whatever it is back over, because it's all been critically well-received. I wonder if he was just expecting to make more money off of it, somehow.

Admittedly not familiar with his work but it's sad to see someone die at such a young age. R.I.P.
