"Brandon [Graham] came back with this vision that stirs my Kubrick, Ridley Scott, Moebius, Robert E. Howard cocktail and I was just blown away. It's decidedly R rated, intelligent, the designs are fantastic and beyond anything I could have imagined. When people talk about someone 'over-delivering' on a project, I'll always think of what Brandon has given to Prophet." -- Rob Liefeld

While Old Man John Prophet and Troll converse, Die Hard and the rest of the band are exploring the ruins of John's former ship...

I like to think Diehard's reaction in that lowest left panel is "The hell were we thinking?"

Ooooh.

I wonder if Glory is going to show up in some form or another?

Prophet's always an interesting read, though I can't help but think of it as Liefeld Minus Liefeld

Which is pretty much the joke, and proof in the pudding of the idea that 'there's no such thing as bad characters, just bad creators'. Put Liefeld on Glory and it's a Wonder Woman knock-off with the usual grotesquely distorted bodies. Put Ross Campbell on and it looks gorgeous and is one of the most unique 'superhero' books on the market. The same applies here, or to Bloodshot (I think that was the name). Take a Liefeld creation and add a good creator and it'll work out.

stirs my Kubrick, Ridley Scott, Moebius, Robert E. Howard cocktail

Gosh, what a perfect summation of Rob Liefeld's 1990's output.... </ irony>

Yeah, I think one of the most infuriating things about Liefeld is the... rather high opinion of himself in spite of the fact he has none of the talent to back it up. IIRC he even refers to himself as "The King:", (Maybe, I may be mistaken, but if so NO! NO! THAT'S A BAD ROB LIEFELD. YOU HAVEN'T EARNED WHAT JACK KIRBY HAS EARNED.)

I thought he tried that but stopped when everyone told him it was stupid.

Granted, I only read the quote above, but it sounded like he was describing the current creative team's work and perhaps things he likes to read/watch, not what he himself had done. And from the above sample, I can see where he's coming from.

The full sentence is

"Brandon [Graham] came back with this vision that stirs my Kubrick, Ridley Scott, Moebius, Robert E. Howard cocktail and I was just blown away. "

It's the use of the word "my" which suggests that he's describing his original work with the characters as the Kubrick/Scott/Moebius/Howard cocktail, and these guys are coming along and adding to it.

And yet, to me the "my" refers to "my tastes". In the same way that "Batman: TAS hits my noir buttons" does not suggest I am any good at noir or have ever done it.

Has Liefeld ever in the past compared himself to any of those luminaries, in fact?

Perhaps, though "Stirred my cocktail" is a new one on me, compared to the far more common "pushed my button" or even "tickled my fancy".

I have no idea if he has or hasn't, but I don't see what that has to do with whether he is on this occasion. He's certainly never lacked confidence in himself, I'll say that for him.

I took it to mean his cocktail of things he likes, as opposed to his creative output. I hate Liefield's work, but I'm not going to disparage him here when he's done nothing but praise the people who've worked on these projects.

This. I thought he was ridiculously egotistical over the way he left DC (including insulting a now-deceased artist), but I can fault his attitude to these projects. The guy's basically used what goodwill he has at Image to keep them going, in some respects.

Liefeld's never had a problem generating unique turns of phrase, I say with absolute neutrality. So I'm going to exercise the principle of charity and agree that he's talking about his tastes here, since he's elsewhere described himself as a "lifelong Moebius geek."

Granted, he's also talked about his own "Moebius phase", so.

Aww, I love how the artist used reflective light effects so it seems like the robot dude is crying. Subtle, but really sad.

Biiiiiiit soon to make assumptions there.

It's been a long, long time since we've seen any of these heroes in their original incarnation.

... guess you're right, I mean: Ben10 started out a superhero road trip show, and now it basically become literally a guy take of "Junpier Lee"" with aliens instead of mystical monsters... and the fact Ben has no real responsibility anymore and has become an "Bizzaro" Peter Parker...
