The only difference is that Ellis did this in an extremely tongue-in-cheek manner, and that the series was never meant to be in-continuity, hence the goofball takes on a Dormammu-esque character and Fin Fang Foom and.. Well, the final villain (no spoilers for people who haven't read it). Marvel just stupidly decided something like this *was* in continuity, despite the fact it doesn't fit at all.
I'm truly a fan of it being in continuity. People are always complaining that comics aren't 'fun' anymore, well, this sure as hell was, and I like that these brand of personalities are now canon in the marvel universe.
Plus Avengers Arena is a little more reasonable, with Cullen going in at the age of 12 years old. Versus Elsa's 12 months.
The idea of a quasi-Satanic, ultra-evil sort of being coming to Earth and being interested in money and Suicide Girls is pretty hilarious.
Don't take what I said as me bagging on Nextwave at all, by the by - It's still one of my favourite Ellis works - I just don't think Marvel continuity deserves something so good.
Probably not what I should be focussing at, certainly not since it's Nextwave, but... how can that thing be called the "Blight Beast of KRAKOW" when it's been in a cage for 5000 years?
The name "Krakow" is a lot younger than 5,000 years, though.
So you get the feeling that he originally called it "The Blight Beast of That One Collection of Huts The Locals Called 'Hurrrrgh'", and then when the city of Krakow was founded, he was like, "New rule, self! It's the Blight Beast of Krakow! Much snappier name!"
Warren Ellis deserves all the applause for having snuck the word "Felch" into a regular ol' Marvel comic. I didn't find out that was even a word until I started getting into Chuck Palhniuk.
Hey, it was included in the list of things that would change if Hank Pym died when he was creating Ultron that Bendis put together for Age of Ultron...
I wouldn't be surprised to find The Captain is holed up in a bunker with Marvelman and all the other unused characters, trying to put himself in some kind of alcoholic coma...
I believe the official Marvel line is that the Nextwave stories are true in broad strokes, but that some specific details may be lies and/or drug-induced hallucinations on the part of the characters involved.
Only some aspects of Nextwave is canon. As it is, Warren Ellis stated in 2005 that he intended the series to be a self contained universe due to the nature of the series. Really the writer's intention should have been enough. Though Joe Quesada a year later even confirmed that it was self contained.
It was only later on during the Civil War story arc did some of the Nextwave elements start sneaking in. They then tried to correct these contradictions of the Nextwave elements by saying they were from Earth A.
But once again, seems like some writers either are not getting the memo or just don't care. So some elements could have happened or there was some form mind control/mind alterations in play.
Unfortunately, Elsa hasn't really been used nearly as awesomely elsewhere as she has in Nextwave. Although the same could be said of nearly all the cast.
