We continue the run of Machine Man with a new supporting cast being introduced by new creative team of Marv Wolfman and Steve Ditko.

Full disclosure: This part of the Machine Man run was reprinted as a backup strip in the UK Transformers comic and even as a kid I thought it felt incredibly dated, in its depictions of women in particular, and when compiling this posts I was surprised to see it was from 1979, having assumed the issues came far earlier.

So you have been warned.

But also I can't resist posting the pages of the ultimate square, Aaron Stack, getting a job in an insurance firm, as we really need more superheroes with incredibly mundane day jobs.

So Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey's Injection #5 hit this week, and I think it's...finished? Without spoiling anything, from the story as shown in #5 it is very hard to tell - the immediate plot is wrapped up, but there are also seeds sown for possible future story arcs. Ellis' style is usually executed in 6-12-chapter stories that end somewhat abruptly; but then again, he's gone outside of that with Planetary in the past and Trees currently. Image's website and solicitations do not clear up the matter at all.

In the meantime, though, as a Comp. Lit. graduate, I thought I'd point out some things I noticed.

Captain America and the Mighty Avengers has been incorporating elements of Nextwave, which has endured for ten years in a sort of semi-canon limbo. For those of you newer to comics, who have never read or even never heard of Nextwave, here's a few scans from the first storyline.

Before this lovely DreamWidth community, we had an old one on LiveJournal. There, frequent bits of a certain series were posted often.

This series, a 12-issue maxi, redefined what we consider to be superhero comic books. Despite the writer's frequent proof that he hates superheroes, none of that was apparent here, only true passion and a unique voice that has never been seen before or since. Composed of unlikely 'heroes', it's been the subject of much fen love for long after it ended. It has absolutely beautiful art, and unique coloring decisions. The idea of heroes working with the government ... it really took that one and blew it out of the park.

It's a bit like Shakespeare, really )
