We've been waiting for this... for such a long time. :)

Since the big broadcast, the Alliance has been fighting a PR war to discredit the information about Miranda, as well as the crew of Serenity, Mal in particular. A movement has started in response, with riots or public protests, depending on which side of the media you listen to. Mal and Company are laying low, but nobody can keep flying without a job forever...

Wow, those are some ... painfully generic faces. If they weren't identified in the dialogue, I'd have no idea who these characters were supposed to be.

I had the same problem with Jeanty's Buffy art. It was one of the things that kept me from connecting to that series as a true continuation of the show.

At least the character voices here are distinct though.

Yeah, but, is it just me, or does it seem like this is almost too much progression? Like, I want to see the moment where Mal and Inara actually decide to hook up.

I'll be surprised if we don't get their first time in a flashback. I think this is six months after the events of the movie?

I've never been the biggest Firefly/Serenity fan, especially with "the Reconstruction IN SPACE." It wasn't Joss Whedon's finest series, despite what so many fans say.

But what do I know? I think there are too many stories where a noble Confederate solider wants to hunt down the Unionists who murdered his family

Fanfics do a lot to make Mal Reynolds look better, where he says things like "An intense dislike of slavery is the only thing the Alliance and I have in common."

I'm pretty Whedon's stated in interviews that the Independents didn't keep slaves. I think he used that analogy only insofar as the Independents fought to keep their, well, independent rights, whereas the actual Confederacy used it as a pretext to keep slavery (since after all the Confederate constitution actually prevented states from banning slavery and the South had no problem with federal power as long as it was used in their favour (see the fugitive slave laws)).

I think you're reading way too much into 'Alliance=Union, Independents=Confederacy'.

I've always imagined it as kind of more like the revolutionary war in the particulars, and the civil war in the execution. The post-war west was obviously the inspiration for the look and feel of it, but the details of the rebellion didn't map very well on to the civil war.

That actually makes more sense to me. All the cowboy stuff and things about Unification and Independence made the Civil War part of Firefly look like they were making slavery part of the analogy.

Serenity did have a strong 'Alliance=Union, Independents=Confederacy' vibe to it, with the losing side heading further out to avoid the winning side.

It does make a certain amount of sense, while still being problematic. I mean, it's definitely based on american mythologizing. But since the revolutionary was wasn't lost, it doesn't really provide a good model, and it's easy to imagine an aftermath that is similar to the civil war, with the romanticizing of "the lost cause", because that did make into the mythology, unlike the fate of the loyalists.

There's some good stuff in Firefly/Serenity, but enough not-great stuff that I was never a never really a fan. One of the big things was that I hated 2/3rds of the romances, and I hear the only tolerable one got axed. I liked Kaylee for being a chirpy, sex-positive space pixie, but then really lost interest in her once she started getting shrewish and sex-shaming around Simon, I despised Mal for how he treated Inara (and occasionally Inara for taking it), and the (blessedly discarded) storyline where Mal won't respect Inara as a lady for being a willing companion, but will do so after she's raped by Reavers was just an extra level of WTF?!

The comics haven't been that good, generally (though I did enjoy the done-in-ones -- the FCBD and web shorts). This looks to be about the same quality, so I'll probably wait for the trade or give it a miss entirely.
