Let's continue with our look at Godhead with the third part of Act 1.

John Stewart and a few Lanterns head to the planet that the New Gods screwed over back in the first part of this event. While dealing with the now crazed and murderous population, they run into Uggha of the New Gods and some of his men...











So they fight and fight and fight, with the New God going on and on about how better he is and how pathetic the Green Lanterns are. Eventually...

Would it kill the writers to make the New Gods sympathetic. You could literally have them do the exact same actions, but not talk like racist assholes and you would have an instantly better story.

I don't think DC can have sympathetic authority figures. Guardians, New Gods....

But what about The Commissioner Gordon? He's sympathetic, after all he's one of Batman's attendants! A bat-tendant, if you will.

But yeah, be In Charge of Stuff for any group greater than a handful to a few thousand, and suddenly you just hate freedom SO much.

Right.

And heck, during Gail's Batgirl, even Gordon and Babs clashed. And now he's a vigilante and not really so much an authority figure.

I don't follow the Bat books very closely, but hasn't it been a while since Gordon was actually the commissioner? Obviously he's Batman right now, but even before that I thought he hadn't been the commissioner since the New 52.

But that would add depth to the story and we certainly can't have that.

even a throwaway line about how for people that operate on the scale of the New Gods a planet IS a small scale test. Something...

Wait a second, isn't the point of this series how the Lanterns uniting makes them stronger, while the (blegch) hegemonic New Gods of the New Genesis are more powerful individually but weaker in their isolation? Because one of the Indigo Tribe showing up and helping to (temporarily) push back Highfather's warriors would be at least a nice nod to that.

As-is, the routine of
New Gods: "Attack!"
Green Lanterns: ""Retreat!"
New Gods: "Attack!"
Green Lanterns: ""Retreat!"
New Gods: "Attack!"
All The Lanterns: "Okay now we're roughly even now we can fight."
Does a lot to make this storyline feel super-generic. That's how ALL super-fights go, no nuance or minor advantages/disadvantages, either straight-up equal brawls or total obliteration.

And for reals, the fact that none of these Lanterns, not even bloody John, of all people, has any idea how to fight someone with a magic ring of super-wishes besides trying to overpower them, is kind of damning.
