That was one thing that confused me to no end when I first heard about it. "Captain America once penciled the MARVEL Universe's Captain America comic book for MARVEL Comics...whaaaaaaaaaat?" There's playing with the notion of fictional characters attempting to achieve some independence and self-direction, and then there's stuff in the vein of "Clark Kent writing exclusive Superman stories" or "Peter Parker selling exclusive photos of that threatening menace Spider-Man". I only read the ones where Gruenwald wrote him, but in those Steve wanted the comic to not just be something good but something true to him, to his ideals and beliefs. The purest mouthpiece for his worldview, which is only saved from creepiness by how kind and upright the character usually is.
